Bit of Happy #142: Ohhhh, the memories!

13 Apr

“Memory… is the diary that we all carry about with us.”
-Oscar Wilde

Memories… Like the first time we road down the sidewalk without training wheels and didn’t fall. Or the time we made a huge step toward finding our true passion in life. Or the first time we got that flutter in our heart from the person we were destined to spend the rest of our life with. Like a diary, all of these are incredible memories that we carry around with us each and every day. Though we may not take the time to revisit them daily, they are never far from our minds, or our hearts.

Today’s quote by Oscar Wilde is an imaginative take on our gift of remembrance. Along with the good memories, some difficult ones are intertwined – ones that we may avoid thinking of. Though, something I’m willing to bet is: despite that these memories may be ones we’d like to skip over, they are also the ones that we have either learned from, grew from, or chose a different path of life because of. These are the life lessons that if you hadn’t endured, you wouldn’t be you! So, with that said… when opening your diary of life, don’t be afraid to celebrate all of your memories!

Happy Wednesday!

Bit of Happy #141: Possibility

12 Apr

“I don’t need easy, I just need possible.”
-The Movie, Soul Surfer

Now, that’s an attitude that never gives up. Though, I’ve never seen the movie, Soul Surfer (in fact, I’m not sure it’s even out in theaters yet) is built from an amazing quote and story.

The first time I heard it I was sitting on my bed with my laptop, writing an entry for Little Bits of Happy. I had the TV on for background noise, and for whatever reason, my ears perked up when the trailer‘s main character spoke these words. I looked up from my computer screen and took in its meaning.

Suddenly, as I found myself pondering the depth of this quote, I realized it would be PERFECT to share on Little Bits of Happy. I did a little research, and Soul Surfer was actually based on a true story. It’s about a girl named Bethany Hamilton who lived, breathed and dreamed about surfing. One day while out in the water, a shark bit her, and she lost one of her arms in the attack. This quote comes out of her recovery. Out of her bravery. Out of learning to surf again, only this time without one of her arms. She struggles, but makes it very clear that it doesn’t have to be easy, as long as it’s possible.

I think we can all take a lot from this type of attitude and apply it to our own lives. I think sometimes when the going gets tough, we give up. We walk away. We find an easier route. But this quote is telling us to do the opposite. It is telling us to have the courage to go after what is possible, not what is easy. It is telling us to dream big, and if there’s a will and a way that we can make it our reality.

I hope you liked today’s quote as much as I did!

Bit of Happy #140: Take Me There

11 Apr

“Take Me There”
by Rascal Flatts

“There’s a place in your heart where nobody’s been.
Take me there.”

This song stole my heart in the first two lines. I don’t think there are enough words in the world to describe how this song touched me. “Take Me There” by Rascal Flatts is, without a doubt, a love song but even then, it seems to reach deeper than that.

It’s not just any love – it’s a love where nobody previously has been before. It is a love that will go deeper than ever before. Grow stronger than ever before. Reach further to the depths of your soul, of your heart, than ever before.

And to make a statement to someone like the very first two lines of this song shows commitment. Shows willingness. Shows the passion to know their love inside out, better than anyone else in this world. And to me, that’s saying something. A lot actually.

A few more lines of the song follow, along with the video (which is pretty cute by the way). Take a moment to read and listen/watch, and if you like the song as much as I do, click the link below to hop on a fast track to buying the song and making it your very own!

“I wanna know, everything about you.
And I wanna go, down every road you’ve been.
Where your hopes and dreams and wishes live,
Where you keep the rest of your life hid.
I wanna know the girl behind that pretty stare.
Take me there.

Your first real kiss, your first true love, you were scared.
Show me where.
You learned about life, spent your summer nights, without a care.
Take me there.
I wanna roll down Mainstreet and back roads like you did when you were a kid.
What makes you who you are, tell me what your story is.

Bit of Happy #139: Walk Until You Can Trip

8 Apr

“You have to walk carefully in the beginning of love; the running across fields into your lover’s arms can only come later when you’re sure they won’t laugh if you trip.”
-Jonathan Carroll

Or, at the very least, you’ll both be laughing with each other.

So, today’s quote by Jonathan Carroll has a ton of hidden advice – advice that I think could be very valuable to all. He isn’t really speaking literally when he tells us to walk and not run when you first meet a love interest.

Instead, he is making the point to try guarding yourself to a certain extent in the beginning. Not keep things hidden from the other, but expose your true personality a little slowly; let things develop naturally – if that makes any sense. We don’t need to reveal our whole life story, weird quirks and bad habits on our first date with someone else, but those should be things that come out with time.

And with all of those aside, the most important thing to guard is your heart. Until you can make mistakes and show your true colors, walk. Until you can experience new things and put faith into them when you feel insecure, walk. Until you can trust the other person to fall in love completely and fully, walk.

But… the moment you can do all of those things, run. Run as fast as you can. And once you reach your lover’s arms, hang on as tight as possible, because life is a wild ride with no guarantees. Oh yeah, and even if you trip, they’ll at least be there to pick you up.

Bit of Happy #138: A Gift With No Cost

7 Apr

“A smile costs nothing but gives much. It enriches those who receive without making poorer those who give. It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever. None is so rich or mighty that he cannot get along without it and none is so poor that he cannot be made rich by it. Yet a smile cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is of no value to anyone until it is given away. Some people are too tired to give you a smile. Give them one of yours, as no one needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give.”
-Anonymous

I found a handful of quotes about the influence of a smile sometime last week. Not that a smile overload would be a bad thing, but I’ve been trying to spread out these new quotes with the others that I have.

Today’s quote, author unknown, was by far one of my favorites of the bunch. The entire thing as a whole brings so much positivity and light to what a smile can do for you… and what it can do for others. And the best part, it’s free! Free and requiring little time and effort, smiling tends to be contagious. We tend to experience happiness out from others’ happiness. Such a small gesture can brighten someone’s day – whether they are your best friend, your parent or a complete stranger.

“It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.” This part, this very sentence is what really tugged at my heart. It touched the very core of my soul. This is the line that made my thoughts drift to the ones I love, picturing each of them with a smile on their face. Cheesy perhaps, but just those memories of each one of them brought – well, what would you know – a smile to my face!

Give away your smiles and collect the ones that are given back to you. You never know when someone you know, or you yourself, may need to bring out that memory on a rainy day. It is the happiest moments that get us through the difficult times. It is the happiest moments that give us a reason to stay strong. It is the happiest moments that remind us why life is worth living.

“Some people are too tired to give you a smile. Give them one of yours, as no one needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give. So, give others a reason to remember to smile. Give them a reason to find happiness in their life. Give them a reason to live each moment to the absolute fullest. And you can do all of these things simply with a smile.

Bit of Happy #137: It’s All About The Attitude

6 Apr

“Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than success, than what other people think, say or do. It is more important than appearance, gift or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you, we are in charge of our attitudes.”
– Charles Swindoll

A bright perspective on a truly important aspect of life, Charles Swindoll shares a very powerful message with us. Throughout life, I have certainly crossed paths with times of doubt, times of helplessness. There have been times that I felt like I wasn’t good enough or didn’t try my absolute hardest.

With this in mind, I wish I had found today’s quote sooner. I want to put it right above my bed so that every morning when I wake up, I am reminded of how I should go through each day. 10% of life is what happens to me, and 90% of it is how I react to those occurrences – what an incredible outlook! You can choose to smile about all of the things and people you have in your life, or you can choose to focus on what you don’t have. You can choose to allow unfavorable things that happen defeat you, or you can pick yourself up and throw that smile right back on your face.

Life all comes down to attitude. Are you open-minded and energetic about each situation you walk into? Or are you one to always point the finger and look at the negative first in each experience? Your reaction to what life brings is what ultimately determines the quality of each day you’re given. Given that 90% in life, you have all of the power in the world, and what you make of that power is completely up to you.

What do you think of today’s quote by Charles Swindoll?

Bit of Happy #136: A World With No Passion?

5 Apr

“Without passion, you don’t have energy; without energy, you have nothing. Nothing great in the world has been accomplished without passion.”
-Donald Trump

Don’t assume from today’s quote that I’m a huge Donald Trump fan, but I must say this statement has a lot of power. Without passion, without a drive to succeed, nothing great will come out of the effort put forth. In fact, there will be no true effort because there lies an unwillingness to put any amount of substantial energy into the task at hand.

I think it is important to take a step back in life and realize what you are truly passionate about. If it’s about helping others, go out in the world and use that as your driving force to accomplish something great. If it’s about caring for animals, wake up every morning and energize yourself with how you will make that a reality. If it’s about making the world more beautiful, take that dream as your daily motivation to change what is gray and bland into something colorful and bright.

Anyone who matches passion with an undeniable energy to accomplish something great in life has the ability to make a difference. Acquire these qualities and practice them each day. Never lose sight of your dreams, and from there, all you have to do is begin with a single step.

Happy Tuesday!
