Bit of Happy #148: Together Forever

21 Apr

“We have been friends together in sunshine and in shade.”
-Anonymous

The type of friendship that we all search and long for. Reliability. Strength. Trust. Honesty. A friendship that will uphold through the thick and thin, in the sunshine and shade. That no matter what life brings, no matter what the obstacle or challenge at hand, two true friends will walk together.

Not only does today’s quote suggest this wonderful, “picture-perfect” friendship, but the author also hints towards it being possible (which is one of my favorite parts!). That, in spoken words, it has come true. That an unbreakable bond can be formed between two people throughout life. That compassion and selflessness can shine through despite the crazy ride our lives tend to lead.

And it’s the unpredictable future, the inevitable unknown that truly proves the strength of a friendship. Puts every aspect to the test. There is no doubt that relationships go through ups and downs – bend just before the point of breaking. Despite this struggle, it’s the willingness to fight for the other that will pull both of you through. That will bring your friendship out of the shade and back into the sun.

And the best part, that time of trial will have mostly likely made that bond stronger, richer… more full. You may have learned something new about the other person, or your relationship with them. You may have revealed a new depth of yourself and can now better understand the meaning of trust. You may have proven your confidence and faithfulness to the friendship in a time of doubt.

Always remember… when you find a friendship like the one described in today’s quote, treasure it like gold. Be willing to give it all of the nurture and effort it requires. Hold on tight because the ride along the way can be full of dips and sharp turns. Whether you’re in the shade or basking in the sunshine, hopefully when you look over at that special person, you can smile. You can smile and know that as long as they are at your side, everything will be just fine.

Do you have a friend like this in your life? What are some challenges you have faced along the way?

Bit of Happy #138: A Gift With No Cost

7 Apr

“A smile costs nothing but gives much. It enriches those who receive without making poorer those who give. It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever. None is so rich or mighty that he cannot get along without it and none is so poor that he cannot be made rich by it. Yet a smile cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is of no value to anyone until it is given away. Some people are too tired to give you a smile. Give them one of yours, as no one needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give.”
-Anonymous

I found a handful of quotes about the influence of a smile sometime last week. Not that a smile overload would be a bad thing, but I’ve been trying to spread out these new quotes with the others that I have.

Today’s quote, author unknown, was by far one of my favorites of the bunch. The entire thing as a whole brings so much positivity and light to what a smile can do for you… and what it can do for others. And the best part, it’s free! Free and requiring little time and effort, smiling tends to be contagious. We tend to experience happiness out from others’ happiness. Such a small gesture can brighten someone’s day – whether they are your best friend, your parent or a complete stranger.

“It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.” This part, this very sentence is what really tugged at my heart. It touched the very core of my soul. This is the line that made my thoughts drift to the ones I love, picturing each of them with a smile on their face. Cheesy perhaps, but just those memories of each one of them brought – well, what would you know – a smile to my face!

Give away your smiles and collect the ones that are given back to you. You never know when someone you know, or you yourself, may need to bring out that memory on a rainy day. It is the happiest moments that get us through the difficult times. It is the happiest moments that give us a reason to stay strong. It is the happiest moments that remind us why life is worth living.

“Some people are too tired to give you a smile. Give them one of yours, as no one needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give. So, give others a reason to remember to smile. Give them a reason to find happiness in their life. Give them a reason to live each moment to the absolute fullest. And you can do all of these things simply with a smile.

Bit of Happy #128: Oldest You’ve Ever Been

24 Mar

“Today is the oldest you’ve ever been, yet the youngest you’ll ever be. Enjoy this day while it lasts.”
-Anonymous

Before reading today’s quote, I had never really thought about age in this light. Normally, I find myself thinking about the past and memories I wish I could go back to. Either that, or looking into the future and dreaming about what the coming days may bring. Never did I realize that today, in these very moments, will be the youngest I’ll ever be, and the oldest I’ve ever been.

Along with this awareness, I thought it was interesting that the Anonymous author paired it with ‘enjoy this day while it lasts.’ It’s important that we embrace each moment we have of life. One day we may find ourselves wishing we had more time, and ultimately, the reality is that we may not have that luxury. As unfortunate as life can be in that regard, there’s only one thing we really can do. We can look at the positive. That we have this time right now, in these very seconds. We can appreciate each day we are given with the ones we love the most by showing that appreciation. We can lend a hand each day we are given and help make the world a better place. We can work toward making a difference each day we are given and live out our true calling. Our dreams. Our hopes.

So, my best advice… Realize that right now is the oldest you’ve ever been, yet the youngest you’ll ever be. Love everything you touch with all of your heart, and do what you can to leave behind a positive print where life takes you.

Bit of Happy #127: What Are You Looking For?

23 Mar

“What you see depends on what you’re looking for.”
-Anonymous

At the very last minute, I found this quote, pretty much just as I was sitting down to write today’s entry. There’s a lot truth in this short phrase, and there’s a lot to be said. Have you ever heard of the sayings, ‘You only see what you want to’ or ‘You only hear what you want to hear’? Well, it’s very similar to the point that today’s quote is trying to make.

It is often that we don’t even realize we are choosing what we see and not see, hear and not hear, believe and not believe, do and not do. It’s usually not a conscious decision, but it’s the way our brain works. There’s constantly millions of little things tugging for attention from our senses. Like right now – the smell of dinner cooking that has crept down the hallway, the sound of my fan twirling above me, the rush of cars racing by, the soft feel of the blankets on my bed, the gentle breathing of my dog, the pressure on my ankles from her body, the various soreness or aches from my muscles, the computer screen, everything in the background… Are you getting the idea yet?

Constantly, I have things demanding my attention. If I weren’t writing this entry right now that is asking me to notice my surroundings, I probably wouldn’t have even acknowledged them in the first place. In order to focus on any one thing, we have to allow other things to fade into the background. It’s how our minds think without interruption. It’s how we get “in the zone,” despite what is going on outside of our world. Instead of opening our mind to everything that is around us, sometimes we find ourselves staying closed in to what we consider comfortable – “our bubble.” And that is the exact awareness that this Anonymous author is trying to bring out in the open.

Do you think it is positive to do this in life?

Do you think there may be a lot of missed opportunities with this attitude?

Do you think this results in close-mindedness? If so, how can we work towards breaking that barrier?

Bit of Happy #108: Waking Up To Optimism

24 Feb

“Wake up every morning with the thought that something wonderful is about to happen.”
-Anonymous

Today’s photograph is a little different today. It’s actually not a photograph at all, but rather a scan of a sketch I did in high school. I just thought it was a beautiful little doodle of daffodils and would be something different to share on Little Bits of Happy.

With that said, today’s quote is like a breath of fresh air. I love the thought of waking up in the morning, rolling over, stretching my arms and legs and relaxing back into my soft mattress. And then as the first thought drifts into my mind, a small smile tugs at the corners of my lips. Something wonderful is going to happen today – the first thought. And with that optimism, I get out of bed with a little happiness in my step. Carrying that throughout the day, I await and open my mind to a miracle that is about to happen.

Whether that epiphany arises or not, the bright outlook you take on each and every morning is bound to bring positivity into all aspects of your life. It never hurts to dress with a happy thought each morning. To open a brand new day to possibility. Chance. Hope. Optimism.

What do you think of today’s quote?

Do you too believe it has the power to brighten the rest of your day? The people around you? The way you feel about yourself and where your life is going?

Bit of Happy #106: The Moments That Take Our Breath Away

22 Feb

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.”
-Anonymous

If this isn’t the cutest picture you’ve ever seen, I don’t know what is! Annie, my dachshund, actually hates being photographed, but sometimes I can catch her making the most adorable expressions!

Anyway, first I’d like to say… Happy Tuesday!

Probably one of my favorites of all time, today’s quote is one that obviously slipped between the cracks; otherwise, I would have shared it much, much sooner! Over the weekend, it popped into my mind, and I had to go back through my quotes on Little Bits of Happy to see if I had posted it yet. Surprised after finding that I hadn’t, it was the first one on my list to share for this week.

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take…” Whether you live 10 years or 100 years, the time you spend in this world doesn’t have an affect on its meaningfulness. A 10-year-old has the capability of making more of his or her life, making the lives of others better and making a significant difference than someone who may live 100 years.

“…But by the moments that take our breath away.” Measured by the cherished memories – moments that take our breath away – life may give us many days or just a few to experience them. The insignificance of the number of breaths we take certainly doesn’t mean to carelessly go through life. Instead, appreciate each moment you are given.

The moment you learn something new about yourself that you never knew before. The moment you change someone’s life for the better. The moment you share your first kiss with the person you are meant to spend the rest of your life with (even though you may not know the significance of that person at the time). The moment you find strength within yourself when you, at first, doubted that strength. The moment you commit the rest of your life to someone, and they make the same promise to you. The moment you see the birth of your first child.

It’s these moments and many alike that truly measure the quality of your life. The unforgettable ones. The ones that you find yourself replaying in your mind when you are searching for encouragement, or looking to go back to the happiest points in your life. It’s these moments that take your breath away…

Hope you loved today’s quote as much as I did, and I would love to know what you think! Click the button below to share your thoughts!

Bit of Happy #103: Home Is Where The Heart Is

17 Feb

“A smile is a light in the window of the soul indicating that the heart is at home.”
-Anonymous

Is this not one of the sweetest quotes you’ve ever read!? I literally found this a few seconds ago, and I know it’s definitely one that I’ll carry with me throughout the rest of my life.

To me, this quote breathes. Through the words, it comes alive. There’s truth. Purity. Happiness.

By opening the window to your soul, you let others into your heart, and in this quote, a smile is a great place to begin that journey.

I find there are moments in life that can certainly be discouraging. Moments when you may find it difficult to leave the window to your soul open. Moments when you get hurt or are forced to endure some type of hardship… and because of that experience, you may allow that window to close. You may shut yourself off from the world. From the people you love. From the things that make you happy. Because of that obstacle, you find yourself putting off living. Locking the window to your heart.

And this process is very much a part of life. I think it’s impossible for someone to leave the window to their heart open all the time. Especially after being hurt. It’s our way of protection. Our way of defense. I think we should allow that guard to go up, but only for a certain amount of time. Only until we can build up the strength to open the window and let the light in again.

And the best way to start… is with a smile.
