Bit of Happy #136: A World With No Passion?

5 Apr

“Without passion, you don’t have energy; without energy, you have nothing. Nothing great in the world has been accomplished without passion.”
-Donald Trump

Don’t assume from today’s quote that I’m a huge Donald Trump fan, but I must say this statement has a lot of power. Without passion, without a drive to succeed, nothing great will come out of the effort put forth. In fact, there will be no true effort because there lies an unwillingness to put any amount of substantial energy into the task at hand.

I think it is important to take a step back in life and realize what you are truly passionate about. If it’s about helping others, go out in the world and use that as your driving force to accomplish something great. If it’s about caring for animals, wake up every morning and energize yourself with how you will make that a reality. If it’s about making the world more beautiful, take that dream as your daily motivation to change what is gray and bland into something colorful and bright.

Anyone who matches passion with an undeniable energy to accomplish something great in life has the ability to make a difference. Acquire these qualities and practice them each day. Never lose sight of your dreams, and from there, all you have to do is begin with a single step.

Happy Tuesday!

Bit of Happy #133: Vision With Action

31 Mar

“Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.”
-Joel Barker

Dreams rise out from a vision, and they will remain dreams if action does not ensue. The true power comes in when you mesh the two – vision and action. Today’s quote by Joel Barker is inspirational. It whispers the secret to making a difference. To changing the world.

Form a vision. Turn it into a dream. And act on it. Make it happen. The most important thing, never lose sight of that vision as you develop a course of action. Each step you take down the path you have created, make sure it coincides with the dreams you initially built.

With that at the forefront of your mind, driving all your efforts, it will be very difficult to divert your plan down a different road. All you need is a little faith and to follow your heart. Do this, and your vision with action will have the ability to change the world.

Bit of Happy #118: The Gift of Sacrifice

10 Mar

“Anyone can give away something expensive, but only those who understand sacrifice can give away something valuable.”
-Kris Vallotton

A million dollars to a billionaire. A small single-family apartment to someone who owns five luxurious houses along some of the most desired coasts. A Honda to someone who owns a brand new BMW, Mercedes and some other super expensive car.

All of these high-ticket items are certainly expensive. They are all things that some people would love to have. At the same time, the billionaire, luxurious homeowner or car owner may very well give away these types of items to help a family, a friend or a charity. But without the understanding of sacrifice, without giving away something of personal value, they cannot truly embrace the gift of giving.

Until you sacrifice something precious to you to help another – something tangible like food or shelter, or something intangible like your time or your love – you can’t possibly understand the entirety to giving.

I think Kris Vallotton brings up a great point. And in light of the giving season, why don’t we all think of something or some way we can give back to our communities?

I never understood why people gave up certain foods for Lent, or promised to exercise daily… something that is beneficial to only who… you. But that’s not really what this time of year is about at all. It’s about sacrifice. And that’s not sacrificing something for personal benefit… it’s supposed to bring happiness and benefit to others. So, give up that junk food and soda, sure… but give it to someone who needs it. Donate it to a local after school program. Or, take the money that you would have spent on that junk food and put it to good use. Good use to benefit others. Make the commitment to exercise every day, sure… but work towards some type of charity walk or race for the cure. Put your energy into something, sacrifice that time and effort to help others who are fighting for their lives.

How can we help others? I think that’s the true question we need to ask ourselves. And the answer to that question lies in being willing to sacrifice… willing to give away something valuable to our lives. That’s when we put the benefit of others above our own. That’s when we make a real difference. That’s when we learn the true value of giving and of self-sacrifice.

Bit of Happy #112: Pursuit of Happiness

2 Mar

“Some pursue happiness; others create it.”
-Anonymous

Whether pursuing or creating, achieving a lifetime of happiness is an accomplishment in itself. There are definitely difficult times in life. Times that you can’t even imagine being happy. But it’s those who go out and pursue it, it’s those who go out and create it when it’s no where to be found… those are the people who make a difference.

After the tragedy of 9/11, it’s the people who supported the families and communities surrounding them that were effected. When hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, it’s the people who traveled short and far distances to help rebuild what was once there. When you are having a terrible day, it’s the people in your life that go out of their way to put a smile on your face. It’s the people who – when there’s no hope in the world – shine their brightest.

It’s those people who you are forever grateful to have in your life. Don’t forget to thank them for all that they do, because it’s those people who clear away the rainy sky and fill it with a burst of sunshine.

Bit of Happy #75: Something Coming Over

27 Dec

Like many, I love the band, OAR. The difference – I didn’t really listen to their music until a few years ago. Most OAR fans my age grew up listening to them as a kid, but I never really gave them much of a chance until pretty recently. Anyway, one of my favorite songs – one that I fell in love with the moment I first heard it – is called “Something Coming Over.”

A love song at its finest, “Something Coming Over” takes on the excitement of a budding relationship, or perhaps the depth of loving another person so much that you find yourself changing for the better. This song tells a little love story about a guy who doesn’t recognize himself at first,

“Who’s that with his arms around you,
Making eyes at you that way?
He looks in love.
He looks familiar,
Damn, it’s me.
Never thought I’d see that day.”

but having found the girl that can settle him down, he finds himself happier than he’s ever been. The lyrics show that in his mind, she is worth settling down for; even though at first, he is unaware that it is even happening – much like the way true love seems to come about, if you ask me anyway.

“And now we’re talking about the future.
Oh, and our future’s wide open,
‘Cause your love is the best place I’ve ever been.”

This is one of my favorite lines of all the lyrics; I just love the optimism and sense of togetherness. It’s something I hope to one day experience and share with someone else – that same type of enthusiasm for each other. Openness and the ability to be spontaneous and excited about the unknown, I believe, is very important for a relationship. It keeps things fresh and new, and encourages a constant level of learning about each other.

So… if you think you know absolutely everything there is to know about the person who has your heart, think again. I’m certainly not denying or trying to discredit your closeness. I’m only attempting to challenge you. To get you to go out and find something that neither of you have ever done before, or done together. I can guarantee that whatever that experience may be, it will bring you closer. It’ll teach you more about one another, and even yourself. That’s the greatest thing about love – it’s ever growing, ever changing. And it’s up to you to keep your love growing and changing together.

Do like this song? Have you ever heard it before?

Did you see the lyrics in a different light or with a different story than I described?
