Bit of Happy #136: A World With No Passion?

5 Apr

“Without passion, you don’t have energy; without energy, you have nothing. Nothing great in the world has been accomplished without passion.”
-Donald Trump

Don’t assume from today’s quote that I’m a huge Donald Trump fan, but I must say this statement has a lot of power. Without passion, without a drive to succeed, nothing great will come out of the effort put forth. In fact, there will be no true effort because there lies an unwillingness to put any amount of substantial energy into the task at hand.

I think it is important to take a step back in life and realize what you are truly passionate about. If it’s about helping others, go out in the world and use that as your driving force to accomplish something great. If it’s about caring for animals, wake up every morning and energize yourself with how you will make that a reality. If it’s about making the world more beautiful, take that dream as your daily motivation to change what is gray and bland into something colorful and bright.

Anyone who matches passion with an undeniable energy to accomplish something great in life has the ability to make a difference. Acquire these qualities and practice them each day. Never lose sight of your dreams, and from there, all you have to do is begin with a single step.

Happy Tuesday!

Bit of Happy #132: What do you see?

30 Mar

“The question is not what you look at, but what you see.”
-Henry David Thoreau

Throughout every second of every day that we spend awake, we are constantly looking at things – as we drive, when we go out for lunch, the work we do, spending time with family and friends, watching a stranger pass on the sidewalk. There are lives living all around us; ones we touch with our own presence, and others we may never come in contact with.

There are plenty of things that we look at on any given day, but what do we see? When you look at a stranger with worn clothes, holding a sign that is asking for money, what do you see? When you look at an acquaintance who is in tears though you’ve never seen cry before, what do you see? When you look at a couple being affectionate and whispering in each others’ ears on a park bench, what do you see?

There’s body language that we take in every day to interpret the lives of others. If you walk past a person in the office with their head down, avoiding eye contact as opposed to someone who looks at you, smiles, and says, “Good Morning,” what do you see about those two people? What is different?

Today’s quote by Henry David Thoreau is asking us to put on our attentive glasses. To be aware and observant of our surroundings. It’s not what you look at that is important, but what you see. What you think. How you interpret.

Look around and realize your surroundings. Learn from them and anticipate the road ahead. Rather than blindly going through your day understand what you are looking at… See.

Bit of Happy 131: Goals Aren’t Enough!

29 Mar

“Goals aren’t enough! You need goals plus deadlines: goals big enough to get excited about and deadlines to make you run. One isn’t much good without the other, but together they can be tremendous.”
-Ben Feldman

A while back, I started thinking about where Little Bits of Happy was going. What do I want to accomplish? When will it be finished? How many Little Bits of Happy should there be? For the past two months or so, I’ve been sitting on these big questions. I started this blog without a clear distinct ending point, and though I had a goal of changing the world through my quotes and my thoughts… how will I measure the success of that?

Though some of these questions are still left unanswered, today’s quote by Ben Feldman made me realize the true importance of deadlines. The goal of changing lives through my words was certainly enough to get me excited, but it’s the deadline that I believe will give me the drive to accomplish it. So here it is:

Deadline: I want to get to Bit of Happy #365 by April 30 of next year, 2012.

That’s right! 365 Quotes – one quote for each day of the year! Like your morning coffee, Little Bits of Happy can become a daily ritual – that little bit of inspiration to get motivated for the day ahead.

Since I have #234 left, and that’s more than twice the amount that I have now, I realize the weight of this commitment. It will take a lot of motivation to still be posting a Little Bit of Happy every day this time next year. But I want to do this. And as long as that passion, that drive stays with me, I know I can do this.

Why does there have to be an end? There are a lot of other dreams and aspirations I want to accomplish in life. And believe it or not, this commitment takes up a great deal of my time. Because of this, it is important to have a deadline – an ending point. Not because I want Little Bits of Happy to end, but because I want to fully experience this and then move on to the next chapter in my life. I never imagined this blog would steal my heart the way it has. I’ve always wanted to start one, but never did I think beyond its beginning. And now that Little Bits of Happy has hit the ground running, up to #131, the next step was to look into the future.

I hope you liked today’s quote, and perhaps felt inspired to create a deadline for a goal you have in life. Deadlines get things started and accomplished. And I think it helps us see that what we want is possible. The first step is to begin!

Happy Tuesday!

Bit of Happy #130: Smile

28 Mar

“Smile”
by Uncle Kracker

“You’re better then the best.
I’m lucky just to linger in your light.
Cooler than the flip side of my pillow, that’s right.”

Smile” by Uncle Kracker is an unforgettable song for its incredible lyrics. It’s pretty amazing when you’ve found that special person in your life whom you admire. Whether a lover, friend, parent, child, that person means the world to you. You feel lucky just to be in their presence. You become a better person simply because they exist. And with that comes happiness. And with happiness comes…

“You make me smile like the sun,
Fall out of bed,
Sing like a bird,
Dizzy in my head.
Spin like a record,
Crazy on a Sunday night.

You make me dance like a fool,
Forget how to breathe,
Shine like gold,
Buzz like a bee.
Just the thought of you can drive me wild,
Oh, you make me smile.”

...a smile. I love the randomness of these lyrics; yet like a jigsaw puzzle, they all have their perfect place. I believe the words come together and describe what it’s like to be in love. Though, in my opinion, the refrain tends to sound more like a deep infatuation for the other, the rest of lyrics are what tie a ribbon around the package and make it whole. Check out these remaining two pieces of verses to see what I mean:

“Even when you’re gone,
Somehow you come along,
Just like a flower poking through the sidewalk crack.”

“Don’t know how I lived without you,
‘Cuz every time that I get around you,
I see the best of me inside your eyes
You make me smile.”

It’s amazing to realize even when that special person isn’t near you, you can still feel them all around you. Everything you look at, touch, or come in contact with reminds you of them in some way or another. Even when you face a difficult obstacle, they “come along, just like a flower poking through the sidewalk crack.” They give you the courage, strength and hope that you need to make it through anything. They make you feel like the best person you can be. They make you smile. And that is something I consider extremely lucky to have. Something that deserves to be cherished and celebrated each and every day of your life. Even in the smallest of ways – a little note, a kiss, a ‘how was your day’ – it’s important to show gratefulness, and even more so… to put that smile right back on their face, just as they have done for you.

I hope you like today’s song as much as I do! When I here the intro start on the radio as I’m driving to work, it immediately brings a smile to my face. And I can only hope it’ll do the same for you. So have a listen, and let me know what you think!

Bit of Happy #109: Just Right

25 Feb

“Sometimes someone says something really small, and it just fits right into this empty place in your heart.”
-Winnie Holzman

Have you ever experienced those moments in life when someone says something to you, and it’s exactly what you needed to hear in that moment? Sometimes I feel like there are angels on Earth that come and rescue me in my times of need. Who know all the right things to say to give me the hope and strength I need to carry on. And I love nothing more than to be able to return the same clarity to the people I care about most, and even strangers.

Give more than you take. And help more than need. If the world focused a little more on ‘give’ and ‘help’ and a little less on ‘take’ and ‘want,’ I think we would have a more gracious life with a much brighter future. Like the sun’s rays sifting through the pine trees, a compliment, words of advice or a kind gesture has the power to fill the empty place in someone’s heart. It has the power to bring hope, joy and reassurance in their time of doubt or hardship.

Kind words can be an irreplaceable gift. And sometimes those words are all a person needs to find their inner strength – their drive to keep fighting. To keep breathing. To keep living. To me, there’s no better sense of success than helping people find the light that was always there to begin with. I live for those moments.

Did today’s quote inspire you to reach out to others?

Has someone ever said the perfect thing just when you needed to hear it?

Bit of Happy #70: I Run To You

20 Dec

“I Run To You”
by Lady Antebellum

Without a doubt, ‘I Run To You’ by Lady Antebellum is one of my favorite songs right now. I’d been planning all weekend for it to be today’s Music Quote Monday, and I – unfortunately – don’t own the song, nor do I hear it very often on the radio. But funny enough, as I was driving home from work today it came on 93.1, and I got really excited – so excited, I sang it at the top of my lungs.

Why do I love it so much? Well, aside from the incredibly talented country band that plays this song, I’m in love with the lyrics. ABSOLUTELY in love! Here are a few of my most favorite lines:

(And I apologize now that it’s practically the whole song.)

“When lies become the truth,
that’s when I run to you…

This world keeps spinning faster
Into a new disaster,
So I run to you, I run to you.
When it all starts coming undone,
You’re the only one I run to, I run to you.”

More than anything, I’m looking for this type of love described in the chorus – this type of support in a relationship. Don’t get me wrong, I have plenty of people in my life that love and care about me – that I could go to for anything, about anything without hesitation. While I’m ever grateful and fortunate that I have this type of support, I’m also excited to find someone. That one special person. The person I can run to for support. For protection. For advice. For love. For everything. And even in this crazy world that we live in, I would know when I open my eyes in the morning and close them at night… he’ll be there. It is something that I look forward to, but not necessarily need in this moment or anytime soon. He’ll come around when the time is right – now, or many, many days from now.

“We run on fumes, your life and mine,
Like the sands of time slippin’ right on through.
And our love’s the only truth,
That’s why I run to you…”

Of this verse, I especially love the last two lines. To be able to believe completely in another person. To be able to trust without an ounce of doubt. To be able to know someone better than you know yourself… well, to me, that’s something I could never take for granted a day in my life. Something I would never want to take for granted a day in my life. To achieve that type of closeness, that type of trust… I think I would consider myself to be the luckiest person in the world.

Now it’s your turn! Have a listen, and be sure to let me know what you think! I hope you like it as much, or even more than I do (though I don’t think that’s possible, lol).

Oh, and by the way… the music video is amazing! I hadn’t seen it until today when I was searching for a video of the song to post. Feel free to talk about what you can take from the video as well when you share your thoughts!

Happy Monday! Hope everyone had a great day!
