Bit of Happy #140: Take Me There

11 Apr

“Take Me There”
by Rascal Flatts

“There’s a place in your heart where nobody’s been.
Take me there.”

This song stole my heart in the first two lines. I don’t think there are enough words in the world to describe how this song touched me. “Take Me There” by Rascal Flatts is, without a doubt, a love song but even then, it seems to reach deeper than that.

It’s not just any love – it’s a love where nobody previously has been before. It is a love that will go deeper than ever before. Grow stronger than ever before. Reach further to the depths of your soul, of your heart, than ever before.

And to make a statement to someone like the very first two lines of this song shows commitment. Shows willingness. Shows the passion to know their love inside out, better than anyone else in this world. And to me, that’s saying something. A lot actually.

A few more lines of the song follow, along with the video (which is pretty cute by the way). Take a moment to read and listen/watch, and if you like the song as much as I do, click the link below to hop on a fast track to buying the song and making it your very own!

“I wanna know, everything about you.
And I wanna go, down every road you’ve been.
Where your hopes and dreams and wishes live,
Where you keep the rest of your life hid.
I wanna know the girl behind that pretty stare.
Take me there.

Your first real kiss, your first true love, you were scared.
Show me where.
You learned about life, spent your summer nights, without a care.
Take me there.
I wanna roll down Mainstreet and back roads like you did when you were a kid.
What makes you who you are, tell me what your story is.

Bit of Happy #127: What Are You Looking For?

23 Mar

“What you see depends on what you’re looking for.”
-Anonymous

At the very last minute, I found this quote, pretty much just as I was sitting down to write today’s entry. There’s a lot truth in this short phrase, and there’s a lot to be said. Have you ever heard of the sayings, ‘You only see what you want to’ or ‘You only hear what you want to hear’? Well, it’s very similar to the point that today’s quote is trying to make.

It is often that we don’t even realize we are choosing what we see and not see, hear and not hear, believe and not believe, do and not do. It’s usually not a conscious decision, but it’s the way our brain works. There’s constantly millions of little things tugging for attention from our senses. Like right now – the smell of dinner cooking that has crept down the hallway, the sound of my fan twirling above me, the rush of cars racing by, the soft feel of the blankets on my bed, the gentle breathing of my dog, the pressure on my ankles from her body, the various soreness or aches from my muscles, the computer screen, everything in the background… Are you getting the idea yet?

Constantly, I have things demanding my attention. If I weren’t writing this entry right now that is asking me to notice my surroundings, I probably wouldn’t have even acknowledged them in the first place. In order to focus on any one thing, we have to allow other things to fade into the background. It’s how our minds think without interruption. It’s how we get “in the zone,” despite what is going on outside of our world. Instead of opening our mind to everything that is around us, sometimes we find ourselves staying closed in to what we consider comfortable – “our bubble.” And that is the exact awareness that this Anonymous author is trying to bring out in the open.

Do you think it is positive to do this in life?

Do you think there may be a lot of missed opportunities with this attitude?

Do you think this results in close-mindedness? If so, how can we work towards breaking that barrier?

Bit of Happy #93: Our Mission In Life

3 Feb

Ashley, from Laurel, MD, was nice enough to share one of her favorite quotes with Little Bits of Happy today! From the show Felicity, Sally Reardon’s character shares these words with a student of hers who she holds close to her heart. Despite the fact that I’ve never seen the show personally, Ashley was able to put together a great back story of the show before sharing her personal thoughts about the quote:

Felicity is about a girl (played by Keri Russell) who changes her college plans to follow a high school crush to New York where he is going to college. During the first two seasons, Felicity sends audiotapes to a former teacher, Sally, from back home because they grew close over the years. In the audiotapes, Felicity shares experiences of her new life in New York. Near the end of each episode, the teacher sends a tape back, and the viewer hears Sally’s response over the closing scene. Despite the distance between them, these tapes seem to close the gap and present the opportunity for personal reflection and meaningful conversation.

And before I get into her personal thoughts on the quote, I just wanted to say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to Ashley for submitting your quote. It means the world to me and is what will ultimately give Little Bits of Happy the power it needs to make a difference!

***********************************************************************************
There are a lot of great quotes about life and love in the show Felicity. One of my favorites is:

“I guess when your heart gets broken, you sort of start to see the cracks in everything. I’m convinced that tragedy wants to harden us, and that our mission is to never let it.” – Sally Reardon

I love this quote because it has a lot of strength in it. It’s true that when something unfortunate happens, whether it is unrequited love or the loss of something, you tend see the world differently after that experience. It happens to everyone, and we can’t always control it. It’s our reaction to what happens that really matters.

(I just realized that the last statement is like another one of Sally’s quotes from the show, “I guess I’m learning, little by little, that we decide what our lives are going to be. Things happen to us, but it is our reactions that matter.”) I really love this show, in case you couldn’t already tell!

People should try to find peace with whatever hardship comes along. In the end, it  will make them that much stronger. I think it relates to your theme of “Little Bits of Happy,” because it describes a willingness to stay strong and never let negativity or tragedy take control of us or our lives. I think it’s also about understanding and realizing that it’s not your fault.

Bit of Happy #91: Pressing Beyond Your Limits

1 Feb

“In each of us are places where we have never gone. Only by pressing the limits do you ever find them.”
-Joyce Brothers

There are two choices in life – to stay in the safety and comfort of everything you know, or to break beyond that barrier and look past the limits you have created in your mind. Only you hold yourself back from what is possible, what is opportune. The world is reflecting in your eyes. The true question is, how will you reflect back in the world?

When I first came across this quote, I fell in love with its verisimilitude. The power of what this quote is suggesting – to break out of your comfort zone, to press beyond your limits – takes an incredible dose of bravery and fortitude. The more we explore, the more we will learn. The more we push into the unknown, the more we will grow. I believe this quote offers an incredible perspective on life; one that we should all find enough courage to give a whirl.

Bit of Happy #88: What Do You See?

27 Jan

One of the coolest things I’ve ever witnessed:

Ice storm of 2009 (or at least, it makes for great photography!)

“Look at everything as though you were seeing it either for the first or last time.”
-Betty Smith

Whether looking through novice eyes or ones filled with wisdom, the way you choose to see the world around you is solely up to you. Commit yourself to a life of appreciation, of wonder and of possibility. Why? Well through my eyes, this creates a world of magic, each turn through this journey is new and different. It hones your ability to pay attention to detail. It brings the important things in life into perspective. It encourages you to treasure each moment your heart continues to beat.

I love this quote by Betty Smith because it is a reminder to soak in our surroundings as though we’ve never seen it before, or as though we will never have another chance to see it again. May we make this promise to ourselves. May we wear this new set of eyes throughout each and every day. May we spread its important message to others. After all, who is to say we can’t? Why can’t we view everything as though we are seeing it for the first or last time? What is stopping us?

Bit of Happy #79: In Light of the New Year

31 Dec

“If you wait to do everything until you’re sure it’s right, you’ll probably never do much of anything.”
-Win Border

I’m sure there are certain things that you have put off doing this year, because for whatever reason, you felt that it wasn’t the right moment in time to do them. With a new year right around the corner (literally), I say we all take some advice from this quote. Make a change. Start new. Begin living. Experience everything you’ve been wanting to!

Just as this quote says, the truth is… that if you don’t start somewhere, you never will. You’ll wake up at ninety years old with creaky bones and wonder where all the time went. Wonder why you never made time for the things you always wanted to do.

I’m not disagreeing that there aren’t certain times for certain things. That sometimes it really is important to wait for the right moment. But for a lot of the other things, I think this quote has an incredible point and is perfect in light of the New Year. And with that said…

I hope everyone has a happy and safe New Year!

Bit of Happy #75: Something Coming Over

27 Dec

Like many, I love the band, OAR. The difference – I didn’t really listen to their music until a few years ago. Most OAR fans my age grew up listening to them as a kid, but I never really gave them much of a chance until pretty recently. Anyway, one of my favorite songs – one that I fell in love with the moment I first heard it – is called “Something Coming Over.”

A love song at its finest, “Something Coming Over” takes on the excitement of a budding relationship, or perhaps the depth of loving another person so much that you find yourself changing for the better. This song tells a little love story about a guy who doesn’t recognize himself at first,

“Who’s that with his arms around you,
Making eyes at you that way?
He looks in love.
He looks familiar,
Damn, it’s me.
Never thought I’d see that day.”

but having found the girl that can settle him down, he finds himself happier than he’s ever been. The lyrics show that in his mind, she is worth settling down for; even though at first, he is unaware that it is even happening – much like the way true love seems to come about, if you ask me anyway.

“And now we’re talking about the future.
Oh, and our future’s wide open,
‘Cause your love is the best place I’ve ever been.”

This is one of my favorite lines of all the lyrics; I just love the optimism and sense of togetherness. It’s something I hope to one day experience and share with someone else – that same type of enthusiasm for each other. Openness and the ability to be spontaneous and excited about the unknown, I believe, is very important for a relationship. It keeps things fresh and new, and encourages a constant level of learning about each other.

So… if you think you know absolutely everything there is to know about the person who has your heart, think again. I’m certainly not denying or trying to discredit your closeness. I’m only attempting to challenge you. To get you to go out and find something that neither of you have ever done before, or done together. I can guarantee that whatever that experience may be, it will bring you closer. It’ll teach you more about one another, and even yourself. That’s the greatest thing about love – it’s ever growing, ever changing. And it’s up to you to keep your love growing and changing together.

Do like this song? Have you ever heard it before?

Did you see the lyrics in a different light or with a different story than I described?
