Bit of Happy #106: The Moments That Take Our Breath Away

22 Feb

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.”
-Anonymous

If this isn’t the cutest picture you’ve ever seen, I don’t know what is! Annie, my dachshund, actually hates being photographed, but sometimes I can catch her making the most adorable expressions!

Anyway, first I’d like to say… Happy Tuesday!

Probably one of my favorites of all time, today’s quote is one that obviously slipped between the cracks; otherwise, I would have shared it much, much sooner! Over the weekend, it popped into my mind, and I had to go back through my quotes on Little Bits of Happy to see if I had posted it yet. Surprised after finding that I hadn’t, it was the first one on my list to share for this week.

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take…” Whether you live 10 years or 100 years, the time you spend in this world doesn’t have an affect on its meaningfulness. A 10-year-old has the capability of making more of his or her life, making the lives of others better and making a significant difference than someone who may live 100 years.

“…But by the moments that take our breath away.” Measured by the cherished memories – moments that take our breath away – life may give us many days or just a few to experience them. The insignificance of the number of breaths we take certainly doesn’t mean to carelessly go through life. Instead, appreciate each moment you are given.

The moment you learn something new about yourself that you never knew before. The moment you change someone’s life for the better. The moment you share your first kiss with the person you are meant to spend the rest of your life with (even though you may not know the significance of that person at the time). The moment you find strength within yourself when you, at first, doubted that strength. The moment you commit the rest of your life to someone, and they make the same promise to you. The moment you see the birth of your first child.

It’s these moments and many alike that truly measure the quality of your life. The unforgettable ones. The ones that you find yourself replaying in your mind when you are searching for encouragement, or looking to go back to the happiest points in your life. It’s these moments that take your breath away…

Hope you loved today’s quote as much as I did, and I would love to know what you think! Click the button below to share your thoughts!

Bit of Happy #104: Old Stomping Grounds

18 Feb

“There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered.”
-Nelson Mandela

This quote reminds me of times in my life when I have returned to places I once spent a lot of time. Memories flood into the forefront of my mind. Of things that had happened. Of who I was in those moments. Of people who meant a lot to me. And it also makes me realize how much I have changed since that moment. Sometimes those changes were leaps and bounds towards becoming a better person. And other times those changes where I initially fell short and made mistakes, I picked myself back up and learned. Grew stronger. More intelligible. Greater confidence.

Does the same thing happen to you when you return to places that you hadn’t been to in years?

Do you find yourself comparing who you are now from then?

Bit of Happy #97: Color Outside Of The Lines!

9 Feb

“Why are we so afraid to color outside of the lines? Take a risk; don’t be afraid to draw the oceans red or the skies green, because this shows creativity. And where would the world be without it?”
-Anonymous

A quote that sits on my desk framed in bright colors, swirling lines and imaginative possibilities, I am reminded each and every day to ask myself… where would I be without creativity?

What do we have without creativity? Straight lines, bland patterns and shades of gray.

How do we live a life without creativity? By taking no chances, no risk and leaving no room for opportunity.

And how exciting would a world lacking any type of vision or imagination be?

With this quote top of mind, it reminds me to live with a little spontaneity, to appreciate the little things (that sometimes end up being the most important) and to wholeheartedly walk through life with an open mind. Open to possibility. Change. Opportunity. Imagination. Creativity.

This quote is telling all of us to… TAKE A CHANCE! Color the sky green and the ocean red. Make the most of what you are given, and yes, sometimes that does involve getting creative! I love this quote because it encourages us to live a little on our daring side. It shows us the importance of looking beyond the surface. It tells us to step outside of the box!

Our mind closes in to what we consider comfortable, and this quote is telling us to do the complete opposite. To push beyond those limits. To do what is unexpected. To find a new way of doing things.

Instead of falling into the monotonous ways of every day life, try looking at things from a new perspective. Look around as if it were your first time seeing the world. What would you change?

The answer to that very question has a lot of power. What you will do with that answer is completely up to you. It will probably take a lot of creativity. A lot of imagination. A lot of going beyond what is considered your comfort zone. But how will you look back on your life after 100 years if you don’t make that change, take that opportunity, reach your dreams?

That’s what I thought. So, what now? Well, if you ask me… I say, pick up that crayon (or colored pencil, paint brush, marker, you get where I’m going with this, lol) and start coloring!

Bit of Happy #96: Remake The World

8 Feb

“As you go out to remake the world, I offer the following bits of wisdom — keep learning, stay awake to amazement, be kind rather than right. And, remember, while you might not agree with this now, being loved is better than being rich.”
-Anonymous

I actually found this quote on a card that was given to me by a family member when I graduated from college. I thought its message was perfect for someone who is graduating, or in a more general sense… turning to a new chapter in life. It reveals a very important lesson that everyone can take something from. Little bits of wisdom.

Keep learning. Stay awake to amazement. Be kind. Love should be held above all things. It’s funny because these are often things I find in many other quotes. These very bits of wisdom seem to pop up everywhere. And it’s that continuous reminder that makes me realize how important this advice truly is.

You know, this quote makes me picture a person after 100 years of life, with skin worn from wrinkles and hair of snow white, speaking these very words. That after being in this world all this time, they have learned – whether at the time or when it was too late – that these are the things that are truly important in life. It would be the advice that someone would give today’s youth as guidance towards a path of no regret. Of fulfillment. Of love.

And in the end, isn’t that what is most important? It’s not having all the money in the world. It’s not the tangible possessions either. But what is important is this… It’s the search for happiness and one day reaching it. It’s finding love and understanding how to appreciate it. It’s living in the moment and learning to cherish those memories.

Life is what you make of it. You can live in a world of gloom and darkness – purples and blues. Or, you can open the window and let the light shine in. The choice is yours for the making.

Bit of Happy #95: Now Or Never

7 Feb

Though not a song you’ll hear on the radio right now, nor one with a million plus views on YouTube, “Now Or Never” by Steve Means certainly does not lack in meaningfulness. Not one verse goes to waste as “Now Or Never” takes you through life’s journey – the struggles and hardships, and the strength it takes to rise above them.

I love the powerful message behind this entire song, but here are a few of my favorite sets of lyrics:

“You take a chance,
And leave behind,
All that you have known.

Follow your dreams,
Into the dark.
The places you never thought you’d go.”

The level of vulnerability that comes with taking a chance and leaving behind everything you know can be undoubtedly overwhelming. I love that these lyrics recognize that difficulty, but still encourage you to follow your dreams even though you may not see the light at the end of the tunnel at first.

“So break into the light,
And the colors deep inside,
Will push away the doubt you find.
But maybe it’s that time,
For you to realize that it might be hard sometimes,
But you’ll be alright.”

Expressed through the chorus is the positivity of looking into the future and the awareness of life not always being easy. These lyrics give those who take a moment to listen to this song the opportunity to realize the benefit of taking those chances in life that may, at first, be scary. Because no matter what, you’ll be alright. You’ll learn. You’ll grow stronger. You’ll live life to its absolute fullest with little or no regret. You’ll step out of the darkness and ‘break into the light.’

I’m incredibly excited to share this song. Mostly because many of you have probably never heard of Steve Means, at least I don’t think he is all that popular. Not yet anyway. And I honestly love nothing more than finding a new, talented artist! And he is definitely that! So, hopefully you have a few minutes to listen to “Now Or Never.” You won’t be disappointed.

Happy Monday!

Bit of Happy #91: Pressing Beyond Your Limits

1 Feb

“In each of us are places where we have never gone. Only by pressing the limits do you ever find them.”
-Joyce Brothers

There are two choices in life – to stay in the safety and comfort of everything you know, or to break beyond that barrier and look past the limits you have created in your mind. Only you hold yourself back from what is possible, what is opportune. The world is reflecting in your eyes. The true question is, how will you reflect back in the world?

When I first came across this quote, I fell in love with its verisimilitude. The power of what this quote is suggesting – to break out of your comfort zone, to press beyond your limits – takes an incredible dose of bravery and fortitude. The more we explore, the more we will learn. The more we push into the unknown, the more we will grow. I believe this quote offers an incredible perspective on life; one that we should all find enough courage to give a whirl.

Bit of Happy #78: Love With All My Heart

30 Dec

A collage of photographs I’ve taken, each with a line of this quote.

“I will know love no matter what circumstances the world may give me, no matter how many people choose to turn and walk away. I will find love in the laughter of little children, in the gentleness of animals, in the beauty and glory of nature, in the knowledge of myself. And when the day comes that I find someone who does not turn away, I will give love with all my heart.”
-Javan

I honestly can’t tell you why I’ve waited so long to share this quote on Little Bits of Happy. I guess I just wanted it to be a special, well-thought entry, and for whatever reason, I haven’t felt up for the challenge of delivering that. But today’s the day!

Why does it matter to me so much? Well, this is truly one of my most favorite quotes, probably ranked right below the first quote I ever jotted down in my quote book so many years ago. (Yes, I realize that was a relative statement.) In fact, if the quote by Emerson held no sentimental value, this one by Javan could have certainly taken its top spot. So with that said, I’m sure you’re beginning to get an idea of its importance to me (in case, the framed photographs hanging the wall of my bedroom gave you no clue).

Part of me is at a loss of words when it comes to this quote – another reason for the hesitation in trying to write about it. The confidence and determination in spreading love throughout the world is so bold within these words that I find myself asking, what more is there to say? It’s not often that I read a quote and am left completely star struck. But what I can say is this…

I find that I live my life in much the same way of this quote. I find love and happiness in all of the things around me – the laughter of little children, the gentleness of animals, the beauty and glory of nature, the knowledge of myself. And by finding that happiness, it fuels my ability to love no matter what challenges or setbacks I’m faced with. No matter what amount of hurt I have to endure. No matter how many people choose to turn and walk away. And with this strength, when the day comes that I find someone who can love me unconditionally, I will return that love with all of my heart.

The resilience in these words is remarkable. Something incredibly admirable. Something, at times, I find difficult to always live up to. Though each and every day, whether bogged down with hurt or disappointment, I try. I try to open my heart. I try to always let love and happiness flood in – even when I’m overwhelmed with sorrow. And that, to me, is one of the hardest things to do in life. To let love in even when there is the risk of being let down.

This quote brings me that inspiration. That drive to keep going, keep trying and keep loving. And as long as I can bring myself to do those very things, to love no matter what life throws my way, I will know I’ve done everything I can. I will know I’ve lived a full and happy life, free of regret. Free of ‘what ifs’. And the very fact that a simple quote can help remind me to love always, encourage me during times of doubt and reassure that I’m strong enough to do all of those things, well, that’s saying something! That’s saying more than something. That’s saying a lot! So, I guess that’s why I love this quote so much. Why I hold it so close to my heart.

I can only hope it will do the same for you..
