Bit of Happy #106: The Moments That Take Our Breath Away

22 Feb

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.”
-Anonymous

If this isn’t the cutest picture you’ve ever seen, I don’t know what is! Annie, my dachshund, actually hates being photographed, but sometimes I can catch her making the most adorable expressions!

Anyway, first I’d like to say… Happy Tuesday!

Probably one of my favorites of all time, today’s quote is one that obviously slipped between the cracks; otherwise, I would have shared it much, much sooner! Over the weekend, it popped into my mind, and I had to go back through my quotes on Little Bits of Happy to see if I had posted it yet. Surprised after finding that I hadn’t, it was the first one on my list to share for this week.

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take…” Whether you live 10 years or 100 years, the time you spend in this world doesn’t have an affect on its meaningfulness. A 10-year-old has the capability of making more of his or her life, making the lives of others better and making a significant difference than someone who may live 100 years.

“…But by the moments that take our breath away.” Measured by the cherished memories – moments that take our breath away – life may give us many days or just a few to experience them. The insignificance of the number of breaths we take certainly doesn’t mean to carelessly go through life. Instead, appreciate each moment you are given.

The moment you learn something new about yourself that you never knew before. The moment you change someone’s life for the better. The moment you share your first kiss with the person you are meant to spend the rest of your life with (even though you may not know the significance of that person at the time). The moment you find strength within yourself when you, at first, doubted that strength. The moment you commit the rest of your life to someone, and they make the same promise to you. The moment you see the birth of your first child.

It’s these moments and many alike that truly measure the quality of your life. The unforgettable ones. The ones that you find yourself replaying in your mind when you are searching for encouragement, or looking to go back to the happiest points in your life. It’s these moments that take your breath away…

Hope you loved today’s quote as much as I did, and I would love to know what you think! Click the button below to share your thoughts!

Bit of Happy #94: A Faithful Step

4 Feb

“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.”
-Martin Luther King, Jr.

Happy Friday! As ready as I am for the weekend, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on today’s quote. Spoken by an inspirational, determined man, I can feel the power and strength in merely the words. There are times in life that can be scary. Overwhelming. Defeating.

Despite those moments, this quote is bringing the reality of life into the forefront. A lot of the time, the first step we take to reaching our goals is one of faith. We have to be willing to risk a certain amount with the hope of one day gaining much more in return. Whether knowledge, experience or love, without taking that initial chance – without taking that first step of faith – you will never learn of your full potential.

To me, failure is incredibly discouraging. But even worse in my mind is not trying at all. To fear failure so much that you refuse to take that initial chance at something new is an even bigger risk. It is a risk of never truly experiencing. Of never truly loving. Of never truly living.

It is impossible to see into the future, and it is okay to not be able to see the whole staircase. But you have to be willing to take that first step, because to stay on the ground… is to risk a lot more.

Bit of Happy #88: What Do You See?

27 Jan

One of the coolest things I’ve ever witnessed:

Ice storm of 2009 (or at least, it makes for great photography!)

“Look at everything as though you were seeing it either for the first or last time.”
-Betty Smith

Whether looking through novice eyes or ones filled with wisdom, the way you choose to see the world around you is solely up to you. Commit yourself to a life of appreciation, of wonder and of possibility. Why? Well through my eyes, this creates a world of magic, each turn through this journey is new and different. It hones your ability to pay attention to detail. It brings the important things in life into perspective. It encourages you to treasure each moment your heart continues to beat.

I love this quote by Betty Smith because it is a reminder to soak in our surroundings as though we’ve never seen it before, or as though we will never have another chance to see it again. May we make this promise to ourselves. May we wear this new set of eyes throughout each and every day. May we spread its important message to others. After all, who is to say we can’t? Why can’t we view everything as though we are seeing it for the first or last time? What is stopping us?
