Bit of Happy #130: Smile

28 Mar

“Smile”
by Uncle Kracker

“You’re better then the best.
I’m lucky just to linger in your light.
Cooler than the flip side of my pillow, that’s right.”

Smile” by Uncle Kracker is an unforgettable song for its incredible lyrics. It’s pretty amazing when you’ve found that special person in your life whom you admire. Whether a lover, friend, parent, child, that person means the world to you. You feel lucky just to be in their presence. You become a better person simply because they exist. And with that comes happiness. And with happiness comes…

“You make me smile like the sun,
Fall out of bed,
Sing like a bird,
Dizzy in my head.
Spin like a record,
Crazy on a Sunday night.

You make me dance like a fool,
Forget how to breathe,
Shine like gold,
Buzz like a bee.
Just the thought of you can drive me wild,
Oh, you make me smile.”

...a smile. I love the randomness of these lyrics; yet like a jigsaw puzzle, they all have their perfect place. I believe the words come together and describe what it’s like to be in love. Though, in my opinion, the refrain tends to sound more like a deep infatuation for the other, the rest of lyrics are what tie a ribbon around the package and make it whole. Check out these remaining two pieces of verses to see what I mean:

“Even when you’re gone,
Somehow you come along,
Just like a flower poking through the sidewalk crack.”

“Don’t know how I lived without you,
‘Cuz every time that I get around you,
I see the best of me inside your eyes
You make me smile.”

It’s amazing to realize even when that special person isn’t near you, you can still feel them all around you. Everything you look at, touch, or come in contact with reminds you of them in some way or another. Even when you face a difficult obstacle, they “come along, just like a flower poking through the sidewalk crack.” They give you the courage, strength and hope that you need to make it through anything. They make you feel like the best person you can be. They make you smile. And that is something I consider extremely lucky to have. Something that deserves to be cherished and celebrated each and every day of your life. Even in the smallest of ways – a little note, a kiss, a ‘how was your day’ – it’s important to show gratefulness, and even more so… to put that smile right back on their face, just as they have done for you.

I hope you like today’s song as much as I do! When I here the intro start on the radio as I’m driving to work, it immediately brings a smile to my face. And I can only hope it’ll do the same for you. So have a listen, and let me know what you think!

Bit of Happy #91: Pressing Beyond Your Limits

1 Feb

“In each of us are places where we have never gone. Only by pressing the limits do you ever find them.”
-Joyce Brothers

There are two choices in life – to stay in the safety and comfort of everything you know, or to break beyond that barrier and look past the limits you have created in your mind. Only you hold yourself back from what is possible, what is opportune. The world is reflecting in your eyes. The true question is, how will you reflect back in the world?

When I first came across this quote, I fell in love with its verisimilitude. The power of what this quote is suggesting – to break out of your comfort zone, to press beyond your limits – takes an incredible dose of bravery and fortitude. The more we explore, the more we will learn. The more we push into the unknown, the more we will grow. I believe this quote offers an incredible perspective on life; one that we should all find enough courage to give a whirl.

Bit of Happy #43: Taken For Granted

11 Nov

“You never truly know what you have until you lose it, and once you lose it, it’s gone forever.”
-Anonymous

In life, it is too easy to take things for granted and too difficult to fully understand how much you appreciate something – that is, until it’s gone. Too often we go through the everyday routine and forget the people and things that mean the most to us. We get stuck in this repetitive cycle and lose touch and attentiveness towards those who we couldn’t see ourselves living without. We begin to take one another for granted – the relationship for granted. And before you know it, you may be going through every day with each other yet know absolutely nothing about what the other is going through. And this happens way too often in life.

So, what can you do? Take a moment. Think of all of the incredible people you have in your life. What if they were gone? Or what if they would be gone tomorrow? Would you treat them differently today? Would you listen more carefully? Would you show them how much you care? Would you tell them you love them over and over and over again because you fear not being able to say it enough? Answering yes to any of these questions – you then have to ask yourself… Am I willing to let the everyday get in way of showing the ones that mean the most to me how much I love them? Am I willing to take the ones that mean the most to me for granted?

And if the answer to those questions are no, how will you change your life? How will you show others you care about them? How will you show them that you don’t want to take them for granted – not for one day of your life? Up until the last beat of your heart, how will you show them you love them more than anything?

I don’t have the answers to these questions. They are for you to answer. And you only. However, a good way to start might be…

Tell those who you care about that you care about them. Tell those who you love that you love them. It never hurts to remind them. Not just once. Not just twice. But every day. Every day, remind them that you couldn’t imagine your life without them.
