Bit of Happy #134: The Only Sunshine

2 Apr

“Today, give a stranger one of your smiles.  It might be the only sunshine he sees all day.”
– Quoted in P.S. I Love You, compiled by H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

What a thought. Today’s quote, compiled by H. Jackson Brown, Jr., shows the power of a smile. Something as small as a that kind gesture can go a long way. It doesn’t cost any money. It doesn’t require the accomplishment of any great feat. Just tug those muscles at the corners of your lips, and you may very well make someone’s day quite wonderful. Inspire new hope. Shine new light.

So what should you do?SMILE!

Happy Friday!

Bit of Happy #117: Spiraling Change

9 Mar

“Change moves in spirals, not circles. For example, the sun goes up and then it goes down. But every time that happens, what do you get? You get a new day. You get a new one. When you breathe, you inhale and you exhale, but every single time that you do you’re a little bit different than the one before. We’re always changing. And it’s important to know that there are some changes you can’t control and that there are others you can.”
-From the movie, Half Nelson

Though I’ve never seen the movie, I came across this quote a few days ago and thought it was absolutely incredible. I’m not even sure what kind of movie this is, but if it has a quote this amazing, it’s got to be decent. In fact, I’ll probably make an effort to see the movie now that I’ve found this quote.

Change. A constant motion. The possibility of a similar pattern, but never exactly the same. This type of realization and the way it is projected sheds a new light on how we live – “you inhale and you exhale, but every single time that you do you’re a little bit different than the one before.”

Despite the minimal quantitative difference overall, each breath we take we have changed in some way than the one before. We are a little older. Hopefully, a little wiser. We may have adjusted the position of our body, or physically moved forward or backward. We may have learned something new. We may have been struck with a vision that we were previously blind to. We may have accomplished something we’ve been giving our all lately. I could go on and on. Change is endless and constant. And the sooner we all recognize and accept that power, the closer we will be to accepting the inevitable – “that there are some changes you can’t control and that there are others you can.”

These changes are the things that happen to us throughout are lives. Some we choose to happen, others are out of our grasp. Some changes are desirable, others can be our worst living nightmare. Today’s quote makes it pretty clear that the importance of change lies in the decisions made proceeding those original changes. It’s not what you can’t control that’s important, but rather what you can.

There are countless instances in life of these types of changes. Does anyone want to share one of their experiences?

Bit of Happy #115: Never Let You Down

7 Mar

This is the song I love to listen to when the weather starts getting warmer. When the snow begins to melt and the golden sun colors the fields and trees with new growth. “Never Let You Down” by The Verve Pipe is one I’ve listened to for a long time now. It’s inspiring and new. Exciting and comforting.

So take a moment to listen to the song and tell me what you think!

“Never Let You Down”
by The Verve Pipe

“I’m trying to keep my feet on the ground.
I’m getting to like this feeling I’ve found.
I’m getting to love
The thought of having you around,
And I will never let you down.”

The budding of a new love explained through these words is quite perfect. It describes that special feeling. The feeling so light that you wouldn’t be surprised if you were walking on air. The belief that you could begin getting used to that kind of happiness. And ultimately, the commitment to the other person that you’ll never let them down…

I hope you like today’s song as much as I do! Share your thoughts!!!

Bit of Happy #113: The Beautiful Dreamer

3 Mar

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
-Eleanor Roosevelt

As beautiful as new fallen snow, the future blossoms from those who believe in possibility and chance. Embrace your dreams. Build them into your destiny. What you make of your life belongs to only one person. And that ONE person is YOU!

I love today’s quote because it seems to live and breathe optimism. All you have to do is believe in yourself. Believe in your dreams, and they are ready and waiting to come true.

What are some of your dreams? What’s are some of the most important things you want to accomplish in your future?

Bit of Happy #111: More Wonderful Still

1 Mar

Today’s quote, shared by Greg, sounds the beat of a slightly different Little Bit of Happy drum. Nonetheless, it’s a great quote, and certainly one that we all can learn a little something from. And that to me makes for a ‘worthy of sharing’ quote! Despite his approach to writing on a whim – “I’m am planning to just type, not really thinking as I go” – what follows is a beautifully natural-written piece. So I’d like to thank Greg the moon, the stars and the world for taking the time to share his thoughts and opinions on this quote. I hope everyone enjoys this unique interpretation of Buechner’s quote as much as I did.

THANK YOUUUU!

“When I first read this quote, I was a bit worried that it may leave an impression to not try new things or overcome obstacles on your own. With the possible interpretation of negativity, I – at first – was afraid that this may not be a little bit of happy. But thinking now, I feel like I can spin the last bit of this quote into something inspirational and happy.

Trying to get by on your own strength in life instead of reaching out to others when you need support will make each step in life a struggle. Missing out on that growth of trusting, but the hardness that going through life alone requires will wear you out. Unfortunately, this is something I do often. I hate asking for help, and for some reason, I feel like if I am able to accomplish something on my own I will come out stronger. However, being resistant towards the love and care from others never gets anyone anywhere.

Steeling yourself against reality can also come in the form of not showing emotion. Society has ingrained in us, men especially, that showing emotion is the equivalent of showing weakness. A man who feels he has mastered his emotions also believes he has overcome all weakness and achieved strength. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Really, he is just emotionally void and cannot experience life or relationships as they are meant. Again… I am guilty of this too.

People shield themselves from the world by not giving their forgiveness. Others make mistakes. We are all human; no one is so perfect that one cannot harm someone emotionally or physically. If someone hurts you, are you really going to shut him or her out, cut off some portion of yourself to them, or just move on from them altogether? Who are you to make such a judgment when you yourself have harmed others just the same?

The commonality of all of these actions is that the person not asking for help, being apathetic, and never giving their forgiveness is the one missing out. That person is missing out on learning a solution to one of their problems, a chance to be the emotional being that we are made to be, and the chance to find resolution and a rekindled relationship. On the other hand, we can just say it like it is in the quote, you are not allowing yourself to be opened up and transformed.

Life will be far more rewarding, have far more love, and have many more strong relationships if people are able to just be who they are without trying to show they’re stronger than emotion, stronger than another person, or stronger than life itself.

This quote is most relevant when it comes to relationships with the people we love. If you cannot submit to some emotions, admit you need help, or forgive others, your relationships will not be as meaningful or as fruitful as they can be. Not only will the relationship suffer, but so will you. You will be missing out of more love, grace, humility, mercy, and companionship than you could ever imagine.

Life is not worth living as the Lone Ranger trying to save the day with his silver bullet. When you are in trouble, sound the alarm, have those you love come to your aid. Show your emotions; people want to see them. Show those that you love that you love them. Finally, forgive those who hurt you. You’re not as strong when you are own as you would be with someone loving at your side. And when you realize that, life will be… more wonderful still.

Bit of Happy #108: Waking Up To Optimism

24 Feb

“Wake up every morning with the thought that something wonderful is about to happen.”
-Anonymous

Today’s photograph is a little different today. It’s actually not a photograph at all, but rather a scan of a sketch I did in high school. I just thought it was a beautiful little doodle of daffodils and would be something different to share on Little Bits of Happy.

With that said, today’s quote is like a breath of fresh air. I love the thought of waking up in the morning, rolling over, stretching my arms and legs and relaxing back into my soft mattress. And then as the first thought drifts into my mind, a small smile tugs at the corners of my lips. Something wonderful is going to happen today – the first thought. And with that optimism, I get out of bed with a little happiness in my step. Carrying that throughout the day, I await and open my mind to a miracle that is about to happen.

Whether that epiphany arises or not, the bright outlook you take on each and every morning is bound to bring positivity into all aspects of your life. It never hurts to dress with a happy thought each morning. To open a brand new day to possibility. Chance. Hope. Optimism.

What do you think of today’s quote?

Do you too believe it has the power to brighten the rest of your day? The people around you? The way you feel about yourself and where your life is going?

Bit of Happy #105: A Little Bit Stronger

21 Feb

“A Little Bit Stronger”
by Sara Evans

“And I’m done hoping that we could work it out
I’m done with how it feels, spinning my wheels
Letting you drag my heart around
And, oh, I’m done thinking that you could ever change

I know my heart will never be the same
But I’m telling myself I’ll be okay
Even on my weakest days,
I get a little bit stronger
.”

My past has presented the possibility for me to, fortunate or not, strongly relate to each lyric of this song. And on some level, I think everyone who has risked their heart for love and then was let down has. Certainly not the easiest moments of life, “A Little Bit Stronger,” by Sara Evans describes the aftermath of a breakup. From hearing songs on the radio to having to force a smile and ignore the hurt, the lyrics bleed the truth. They are real and honest. How do I know this? Because I’ve been through these lyrics, word for word.

And I’m not saying it’s a walk in the park. Because it’s not; it is far from it actually. But what I am saying is this… There are really, really, REALLY difficult times in life. Times that you believe you’ll never make it through in one piece. But when you surprise yourself and do find that strength to put the pieces back together… The moment when you turn around and a month has gone by without crying, you smile to yourself a little bit. You get ‘a little bit stronger.’

The moment you realize you need to put your foot down and stop letting him (or her) drag your heart around, you get ‘a little bit stronger.’

Once you accept that your heart may never be the same, but you’ll still be okay… you get ‘a little bit stronger.’

I especially love the lyrics: “Even on my weakest days, I get a little bit stronger.” Each day you make it through, it’s a little bit step towards finding who you are again. It’s a little step towards living life without that person. It’s a little step towards leaving the hurt behind. Each day you get further away from the initial day of breaking up, you realize you can make it in this life without them.

And even when you don’t realize that… even when you still believe that he (or she) will change… even when you still hope that he (or she) will come running back into your arms… Even on those days, you ‘get a little bit stronger.’ You get a little bit stronger because even in moments of weakness, it is still time that passes. And with time comes healing.

In my weakest days, I never thought I would move on. In many ways, I was determined to do the opposite. I wanted to hold on for the rest of my life. But looking back on it now… going many, many days without a tear. Going many, many days without wishing he’d come back. Going many, many days without allowing him to drag my heart around. I’ve realized I’m stronger. A lot stronger. And better off.

Looking back on it now, having found someone new… someone who has showed me how I deserve to be treated… someone who smiles just to see me smile, I wouldn’t change a single moment of my past. I wouldn’t change the hurt that I’ve had to endure. I wouldn’t change the choices I’ve made or the moments I’ve shared with people. If I wished for that, I wouldn’t be me. I wouldn’t be able to appreciate and truly cherish what I have now. So instead of regretting the past, I celebrate it. Because without my past, I wouldn’t in the very moment that I am now.

So have a listen, I hope you get the same sense of strength from “A Little Bit Stronger” that I have!

Happy Monday!
