Bit of Happy #142: Ohhhh, the memories!

13 Apr

“Memory… is the diary that we all carry about with us.”
-Oscar Wilde

Memories… Like the first time we road down the sidewalk without training wheels and didn’t fall. Or the time we made a huge step toward finding our true passion in life. Or the first time we got that flutter in our heart from the person we were destined to spend the rest of our life with. Like a diary, all of these are incredible memories that we carry around with us each and every day. Though we may not take the time to revisit them daily, they are never far from our minds, or our hearts.

Today’s quote by Oscar Wilde is an imaginative take on our gift of remembrance. Along with the good memories, some difficult ones are intertwined – ones that we may avoid thinking of. Though, something I’m willing to bet is: despite that these memories may be ones we’d like to skip over, they are also the ones that we have either learned from, grew from, or chose a different path of life because of. These are the life lessons that if you hadn’t endured, you wouldn’t be you! So, with that said… when opening your diary of life, don’t be afraid to celebrate all of your memories!

Bit of Happy #136: A World With No Passion?

5 Apr

“Without passion, you don’t have energy; without energy, you have nothing. Nothing great in the world has been accomplished without passion.”
-Donald Trump

Don’t assume from today’s quote that I’m a huge Donald Trump fan, but I must say this statement has a lot of power. Without passion, without a drive to succeed, nothing great will come out of the effort put forth. In fact, there will be no true effort because there lies an unwillingness to put any amount of substantial energy into the task at hand.

I think it is important to take a step back in life and realize what you are truly passionate about. If it’s about helping others, go out in the world and use that as your driving force to accomplish something great. If it’s about caring for animals, wake up every morning and energize yourself with how you will make that a reality. If it’s about making the world more beautiful, take that dream as your daily motivation to change what is gray and bland into something colorful and bright.

Anyone who matches passion with an undeniable energy to accomplish something great in life has the ability to make a difference. Acquire these qualities and practice them each day. Never lose sight of your dreams, and from there, all you have to do is begin with a single step.

Bit of Happy 131: Goals Aren’t Enough!

29 Mar

“Goals aren’t enough! You need goals plus deadlines: goals big enough to get excited about and deadlines to make you run. One isn’t much good without the other, but together they can be tremendous.”
-Ben Feldman

A while back, I started thinking about where Little Bits of Happy was going. What do I want to accomplish? When will it be finished? How many Little Bits of Happy should there be? For the past two months or so, I’ve been sitting on these big questions. I started this blog without a clear distinct ending point, and though I had a goal of changing the world through my quotes and my thoughts… how will I measure the success of that?

Though some of these questions are still left unanswered, today’s quote by Ben Feldman made me realize the true importance of deadlines. The goal of changing lives through my words was certainly enough to get me excited, but it’s the deadline that I believe will give me the drive to accomplish it. So here it is:

Deadline: I want to get to Bit of Happy #365 by April 30 of next year, 2012.

That’s right! 365 Quotes – one quote for each day of the year! Like your morning coffee, Little Bits of Happy can become a daily ritual – that little bit of inspiration to get motivated for the day ahead.

Since I have #234 left, and that’s more than twice the amount that I have now, I realize the weight of this commitment. It will take a lot of motivation to still be posting a Little Bit of Happy every day this time next year. But I want to do this. And as long as that passion, that drive stays with me, I know I can do this.

Why does there have to be an end? There are a lot of other dreams and aspirations I want to accomplish in life. And believe it or not, this commitment takes up a great deal of my time. Because of this, it is important to have a deadline – an ending point. Not because I want Little Bits of Happy to end, but because I want to fully experience this and then move on to the next chapter in my life. I never imagined this blog would steal my heart the way it has. I’ve always wanted to start one, but never did I think beyond its beginning. And now that Little Bits of Happy has hit the ground running, up to #131, the next step was to look into the future.

I hope you liked today’s quote, and perhaps felt inspired to create a deadline for a goal you have in life. Deadlines get things started and accomplished. And I think it helps us see that what we want is possible. The first step is to begin!

Bit of Happy #90: Stand

31 Jan

“Stand”
by Rascal Flatts

All of us know what it’s like to feel alone. Helpless. Vulnerable. “Like a candle in a hurricane. Just like a picture with a broken frame.” Life comes with a lot of uncertainty. The unknown can be very overwhelming. One minute your traveling along a newly paved road, and the next you find yourself taking twists and turns down a beaten path with no end in sight. “Stand” by Rascal Flatts recognizes those bumps in the road, but also shows the strength and patience people have to find the next right turn.

“Because when push comes to shove,
You taste what you’re made of.
You might bend ’til you break,
Because it’s all you can take.

On your knees you look up,
Decide you’ve had enough.
You get mad, you get strong.
Wipe your hands, shake it off,
Then you stand.”

I had a hard time finding the song I wanted to share this week, but the moment I skimmed over “Stand” in my iTunes playlist, there was no question. The lyrics are pure and real. Like the sunlight through a dusty window, this song shines truth and strength, overpowering the uncertainty that life sometimes leads.

Life’s like a novel,
With the end ripped out.
The edge of a canyon,
With only one way down.

Take what you’re given,
Before its gone.
Start holding on,
Keep holding on.”

It expresses the fight and determination. The hope and appreciation. We all have it inside of us. Burning inside of us. Sometimes it’s not always easy to find, but once our search crosses paths with that passion, we never give up. We uncover a new direction. And we don’t stop until we are back up on our own two feet. This song has never failed to give me the inspiration I need to keep fighting when things get tough, and I hope it can do the same for you!

Happy Monday!

Bit of Happy #84: A Brand New Tomorrow

7 Jan

Morning Ice Storm in 2009.

“Tomorrow is the beginning of the rest of your life.”
-Trading Hearts

Happy Friday, everyone! Unfortunately, I’m not feeling too well today, but I did want to take a moment and post a quote. It’s a very optimistic approach to looking at life and the road ahead. This quote by Trading Hearts inspires me to take each day and treat it as a new beginning. I believe its words can encourage many with that extra push of hope and motivation to get out there and live life to the fullest! To put the past behind them. To go through each day with a smile. To accomplish all of the things they’ve ever dreamed of doing. To reach their passion in life.

And now it’s your turn – to treat tomorrow as your new beginning. What will you do with it?

Bit of Happy #71: Keep The Light In Your Eyes

21 Dec

An Old Norwegian Christmas Carousel Decoration

“Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.”
-Douglas MacArthur

Keep the passion burning, the light in your eyes and a smile on your face. Live life full of hope and wonder, and don’t be afraid to let your imagination carry you away. Put your whole heart into everything you do, and you’ll never age a day in your life.

What do you think of this quote? Do you find truth in these words?

Bit of Happy #50: Forever

22 Nov

It’s Bit of Happy #50 today! For some reason, I feel like this is some kind of milestone that I should recognize – half way to one hundred. Kind of ironic that today’s song is titled ‘Forever.’

Made me wonder how long Little Bits of Happy will last. I started this blog with no distinct idea of when I would be finished – no clear end point. The only goal I truly wanted to accomplish was to inspire others to seek out their own happiness through my little bits of happy, my favorite quotes. But when will I know I’ve reach that? Maybe I’ll find the answer to this question one day. But for now, I’m okay with not knowing. I’m okay with this question going unanswered.

Now to the song! ‘Forever’ by Ben Harper has been one of my favorites ever since I heard it for the first time. The gentle melody, the softly spoken lyrics and the revealed truth make this song one that I’ll never stop listening to. Sung almost at a whisper, the feeling expressed in these lyrics are strong and unforgettable. So feel free to have a listen. Hope you enjoy it!

“Forever always seems to be around when things begin, but forever never seems to be around when things end.”

The forever he sings about in this song, “Not talking about a year. No, not three or four. I don’t want that kind of forever in my life anymore,” is the kind of forever that everyone wants to find one day, right? But when do things truly last   f  o  r  e  v  e  r ? When is there as much passion and love in the beginning as there is in the end? Is it even possible? So often, our relationships take on a superficial type of forever. So often, things end with heart break. So often, things end in separation. So often, things end in divorce. What was once forever reflecting in your eyes, now leaves you wondering if things will last until tomorrow. Wow, this doesn’t sound very encouraging…

But it is meant to. Even with all odds against me, I still believe forever exists. I believe it is possible. I hope I can find my forever. Not necessarily any time soon – but one day. This song is meant to make you reflect. Make you think. Think about the future. Think about what you truly want out of this life. This song makes me recognize what the world is too often like, but it also makes me believe that there are still people out there looking for the real forever. The type of love that never dies. The type of love that understands and makes no promises that the cool winds won’t blow. The type of love that, against all odds, will never let the flame burn out, no matter what.

“So give me your forever, not a day less will do… from you.”

My BIGGEST question for you is… Did you see this as a sad song or a happy one? Was it the melody that made it sad or the lyrics?

Did you take something differently from this song?

Do you disagree with the lyrics or do you believe that are right on point?
