Bit of Happy #142: Ohhhh, the memories!

13 Apr

“Memory… is the diary that we all carry about with us.”
-Oscar Wilde

Memories… Like the first time we road down the sidewalk without training wheels and didn’t fall. Or the time we made a huge step toward finding our true passion in life. Or the first time we got that flutter in our heart from the person we were destined to spend the rest of our life with. Like a diary, all of these are incredible memories that we carry around with us each and every day. Though we may not take the time to revisit them daily, they are never far from our minds, or our hearts.

Today’s quote by Oscar Wilde is an imaginative take on our gift of remembrance. Along with the good memories, some difficult ones are intertwined – ones that we may avoid thinking of. Though, something I’m willing to bet is: despite that these memories may be ones we’d like to skip over, they are also the ones that we have either learned from, grew from, or chose a different path of life because of. These are the life lessons that if you hadn’t endured, you wouldn’t be you! So, with that said… when opening your diary of life, don’t be afraid to celebrate all of your memories!

Happy Wednesday!

Bit of Happy #110: Live Like We’re Dying

28 Feb

“Live Like We’re Dying”
by Kris Allen

Why I haven’t shared this song sooner with Little Bits of Happy, I can’t quite explain. But it’s here now! “Live Like We’re Dying,” by Kris Allen has countless phrases within the song that I find myself hanging on to. The realities of life are so apparent and lucid in these lyrics – through the proposed questions and the secrets to walking a meaningful, enlightened path.

“So if your life flashed before you,
What would you wish you would’ve done?”

“And if your plane fell out of the skies,
Who would you call with your last goodbye?”

Embedded in the lyrics are questions. Questions that may be difficult to answer; others that may be as plain as day. But I love how this song makes you think. Makes you question. Makes you evaluate your life, and helps you realize the truly important things. The things you need to set as your top priority.

“Sometimes we fall down, can’t get back up.
We’re hiding behind skin that’s too tough.
How come we don’t say I love you enough?
Till it’s too late, it’s not too late.”

Life can be challenging – even bend you until you break. And out from these difficult experiences, we put on a thick skin to keep this vulnerability from happening again. We build these walls around ourselves so nothing can get in. Nothing bad, but nothing good either.

Is that really the answer here? Should we hide from life because it might end up breaking us? Should we not risk being happy because it may hurt us so much more in the end?

“We only got 86,400 seconds in a day…” to either change what we’ve got and make it better or waste that time doing nothing. We have the opportunity to change our lives, the lives of others.. the world. “Till it’s too late, it’s not too late.” Until we take our very last breath, the world is in our hands. It’s up to us whether we lift it up or break it down.

What will you do with your seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, years… time?

Bit of Happy #98: Love Is Just A Word…

10 Feb

“Love is just a word until someone comes along and gives it meaning.”
-Anonymous

Even though I don’t quite remember where or when I came across this quote, I thought it had a great perspective on the meaning of love. To me, I’ve always thought of love being this big, heavy word that you should only say if you truly mean it. And I still believe that.

But today’s quote strums a different tune. It gives love more of a whimsical, light meaning that is up for interpretation. That for each relationship, love could mean something different depending on what each person brings to the table. That you may not truly understand what love is until someone comes along and shows you.

The realization that each person shows love differently brings forth a new perspective. That you can’t sit down and write out exactly what love means and then go out and find it. That you will not find the cookie cutter, picture perfect girl or guy of your dreams. No one is perfect. No one was put in this world especially for you.

But when two people with two separate lives filled with different experiences cross paths with similar thoughts, beliefs, morals and a mutual attraction for each other, those two people may decide to travel down a new path, hand in hand. Create new experiences together. Learn together. Grow together. Endure hardships and celebrate accomplishments together. And with time, they may begin to define their love for each other… together.

For me, today’s quote brought up a new way of thinking to what love is and can be. Hopefully it can do the same for you.

Happy Thursday!

What do you think of today’s quote?

Do you believe something differently about how love is defined?

Bit of Happy #96: Remake The World

8 Feb

“As you go out to remake the world, I offer the following bits of wisdom — keep learning, stay awake to amazement, be kind rather than right. And, remember, while you might not agree with this now, being loved is better than being rich.”
-Anonymous

I actually found this quote on a card that was given to me by a family member when I graduated from college. I thought its message was perfect for someone who is graduating, or in a more general sense… turning to a new chapter in life. It reveals a very important lesson that everyone can take something from. Little bits of wisdom.

Keep learning. Stay awake to amazement. Be kind. Love should be held above all things. It’s funny because these are often things I find in many other quotes. These very bits of wisdom seem to pop up everywhere. And it’s that continuous reminder that makes me realize how important this advice truly is.

You know, this quote makes me picture a person after 100 years of life, with skin worn from wrinkles and hair of snow white, speaking these very words. That after being in this world all this time, they have learned – whether at the time or when it was too late – that these are the things that are truly important in life. It would be the advice that someone would give today’s youth as guidance towards a path of no regret. Of fulfillment. Of love.

And in the end, isn’t that what is most important? It’s not having all the money in the world. It’s not the tangible possessions either. But what is important is this… It’s the search for happiness and one day reaching it. It’s finding love and understanding how to appreciate it. It’s living in the moment and learning to cherish those memories.

Life is what you make of it. You can live in a world of gloom and darkness – purples and blues. Or, you can open the window and let the light shine in. The choice is yours for the making.

Bit of Happy #90: Stand

31 Jan

“Stand”
by Rascal Flatts

All of us know what it’s like to feel alone. Helpless. Vulnerable. “Like a candle in a hurricane. Just like a picture with a broken frame.” Life comes with a lot of uncertainty. The unknown can be very overwhelming. One minute your traveling along a newly paved road, and the next you find yourself taking twists and turns down a beaten path with no end in sight. “Stand” by Rascal Flatts recognizes those bumps in the road, but also shows the strength and patience people have to find the next right turn.

“Because when push comes to shove,
You taste what you’re made of.
You might bend ’til you break,
Because it’s all you can take.

On your knees you look up,
Decide you’ve had enough.
You get mad, you get strong.
Wipe your hands, shake it off,
Then you stand.”

I had a hard time finding the song I wanted to share this week, but the moment I skimmed over “Stand” in my iTunes playlist, there was no question. The lyrics are pure and real. Like the sunlight through a dusty window, this song shines truth and strength, overpowering the uncertainty that life sometimes leads.

Life’s like a novel,
With the end ripped out.
The edge of a canyon,
With only one way down.

Take what you’re given,
Before its gone.
Start holding on,
Keep holding on.”

It expresses the fight and determination. The hope and appreciation. We all have it inside of us. Burning inside of us. Sometimes it’s not always easy to find, but once our search crosses paths with that passion, we never give up. We uncover a new direction. And we don’t stop until we are back up on our own two feet. This song has never failed to give me the inspiration I need to keep fighting when things get tough, and I hope it can do the same for you!

Happy Monday!

Bit of Happy #87: It All Begins In The Mind

26 Jan

“Watch your thoughts; they become words.
Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character.
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.”
-Frank Outlaw

Like a small seed planted into the ground, your destiny begins from a simple thought. As the thought turns into words, which turns into actions, what was once a tiny seed begins budding in new growth. From your repetitious actions, habits slowly form, and your character begins to emerge. And who you are and the path you proceed in this life will ultimately determine your fate.

I think this is an incredible quote and offers some great advice. It shows the power of a simple thought and its ability to lead you into the future. Watching what you think, what you say and how you act is good practice for anyone. Focusing on positive thoughts will bring positive words, actions and habits. Building an optimistic character will spread that same optimism all around you. And by surrounding yourself with happiness, love and strength, a beautiful flower will begin to blossom.

Bit of Happy #73: Plant Positivity

23 Dec

Stockings Hanging by the Fireplace

“If constructive thoughts are planted, positive outcomes will be the result. Plant the seeds of failure, and failure will follow.”
-Sidney Madwed

By carrying positivity with you each and every day, the determination of your future will build off of that optimism. Today’s quote suggests that your attitude plays a huge part in what your days to come will hold. And in many ways, I believe there’s a lot of truth in this quote.

The thoughts you bring with you to work, school, around your friends and home to your family have a tendency to, not only affect how you present yourself on the outside, but also the level of happiness you experience on the inside.

With no confidence or drive to better yourself, how do you expect to succeed? And even more importantly, when you do meet failure throughout your life, your ability to think constructively will affect your ability to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and find a new path to try for a more optimistic outcome.

Open your mind to positivity. When life feels like it can’t get any worse, the true reality is… it can always get worse. So find the positive! I’m not doubting that there are times in life that can be extremely difficult to see the light. I’m just saying… make the best of what you have in front of you. And if that’s not good enough, find ways to make it better. And thinking positively is the very first step!

Happy Thursday!

Do you believe this quote is true?

Do you think it’s possible to be incredibly negative and still find positive outcomes?
