Bit of Happy #129: Don’t Miss Out

25 Mar

“Plenty of people miss their share of happiness – not because they never found it, but because they didn’t stop to enjoy it.”
-William Feather

Sometimes it’s difficult for us to realize what we truly have. If some of the most precious things in our lives were suddenly jeopardized, I believe we would see into a small window of what it would be like without them.

After reading that very sentence, it’s the things that first popped into your mind; those are the things that mean the most to you. And those are the first things you should put most of your effort into. Most of you heart into. Stop to enjoy and celebrate the days you are given.

Each and every day you are given with them should be a day cherished. So hug them a little tighter. Love them more than yesterday. Show you appreciate all of the little things they do.

Your happiness is all around you. You’re breathing it in, basking in its warmth. But until you take a moment, close your eyes and remember all of the reasons you have to be happy, you may let it pass you by.

Speaking of happy… Happy Friday!

Bit of Happy #112: Pursuit of Happiness

2 Mar

“Some pursue happiness; others create it.”
-Anonymous

Whether pursuing or creating, achieving a lifetime of happiness is an accomplishment in itself. There are definitely difficult times in life. Times that you can’t even imagine being happy. But it’s those who go out and pursue it, it’s those who go out and create it when it’s no where to be found… those are the people who make a difference.

After the tragedy of 9/11, it’s the people who supported the families and communities surrounding them that were effected. When hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, it’s the people who traveled short and far distances to help rebuild what was once there. When you are having a terrible day, it’s the people in your life that go out of their way to put a smile on your face. It’s the people who – when there’s no hope in the world – shine their brightest.

It’s those people who you are forever grateful to have in your life. Don’t forget to thank them for all that they do, because it’s those people who clear away the rainy sky and fill it with a burst of sunshine.

Bit of Happy #109: Just Right

25 Feb

“Sometimes someone says something really small, and it just fits right into this empty place in your heart.”
-Winnie Holzman

Have you ever experienced those moments in life when someone says something to you, and it’s exactly what you needed to hear in that moment? Sometimes I feel like there are angels on Earth that come and rescue me in my times of need. Who know all the right things to say to give me the hope and strength I need to carry on. And I love nothing more than to be able to return the same clarity to the people I care about most, and even strangers.

Give more than you take. And help more than need. If the world focused a little more on ‘give’ and ‘help’ and a little less on ‘take’ and ‘want,’ I think we would have a more gracious life with a much brighter future. Like the sun’s rays sifting through the pine trees, a compliment, words of advice or a kind gesture has the power to fill the empty place in someone’s heart. It has the power to bring hope, joy and reassurance in their time of doubt or hardship.

Kind words can be an irreplaceable gift. And sometimes those words are all a person needs to find their inner strength – their drive to keep fighting. To keep breathing. To keep living. To me, there’s no better sense of success than helping people find the light that was always there to begin with. I live for those moments.

Did today’s quote inspire you to reach out to others?

Has someone ever said the perfect thing just when you needed to hear it?

Bit of Happy #78: Love With All My Heart

30 Dec

A collage of photographs I’ve taken, each with a line of this quote.

“I will know love no matter what circumstances the world may give me, no matter how many people choose to turn and walk away. I will find love in the laughter of little children, in the gentleness of animals, in the beauty and glory of nature, in the knowledge of myself. And when the day comes that I find someone who does not turn away, I will give love with all my heart.”
-Javan

I honestly can’t tell you why I’ve waited so long to share this quote on Little Bits of Happy. I guess I just wanted it to be a special, well-thought entry, and for whatever reason, I haven’t felt up for the challenge of delivering that. But today’s the day!

Why does it matter to me so much? Well, this is truly one of my most favorite quotes, probably ranked right below the first quote I ever jotted down in my quote book so many years ago. (Yes, I realize that was a relative statement.) In fact, if the quote by Emerson held no sentimental value, this one by Javan could have certainly taken its top spot. So with that said, I’m sure you’re beginning to get an idea of its importance to me (in case, the framed photographs hanging the wall of my bedroom gave you no clue).

Part of me is at a loss of words when it comes to this quote – another reason for the hesitation in trying to write about it. The confidence and determination in spreading love throughout the world is so bold within these words that I find myself asking, what more is there to say? It’s not often that I read a quote and am left completely star struck. But what I can say is this…

I find that I live my life in much the same way of this quote. I find love and happiness in all of the things around me – the laughter of little children, the gentleness of animals, the beauty and glory of nature, the knowledge of myself. And by finding that happiness, it fuels my ability to love no matter what challenges or setbacks I’m faced with. No matter what amount of hurt I have to endure. No matter how many people choose to turn and walk away. And with this strength, when the day comes that I find someone who can love me unconditionally, I will return that love with all of my heart.

The resilience in these words is remarkable. Something incredibly admirable. Something, at times, I find difficult to always live up to. Though each and every day, whether bogged down with hurt or disappointment, I try. I try to open my heart. I try to always let love and happiness flood in – even when I’m overwhelmed with sorrow. And that, to me, is one of the hardest things to do in life. To let love in even when there is the risk of being let down.

This quote brings me that inspiration. That drive to keep going, keep trying and keep loving. And as long as I can bring myself to do those very things, to love no matter what life throws my way, I will know I’ve done everything I can. I will know I’ve lived a full and happy life, free of regret. Free of ‘what ifs’. And the very fact that a simple quote can help remind me to love always, encourage me during times of doubt and reassure that I’m strong enough to do all of those things, well, that’s saying something! That’s saying more than something. That’s saying a lot! So, I guess that’s why I love this quote so much. Why I hold it so close to my heart.

I can only hope it will do the same for you..

Bit of Happy #77: Stop and Smell the Roses

29 Dec

“Plenty of people miss their share of happiness, not because they never found it, but because they didn’t stop to enjoy it.”
-William Feather

Ever heard the expression… ‘Stop and smell the roses?’ Well, that’s exactly what the quote by William Feather is trying to convey – just in different words. Despite the fact that this expression has become quite cliché, its meaning is something that we too often forget to do.

And what might its meaning be? To find happiness, we need to take moments out of each day to appreciate all of the things that we have in life. Habitually, we find ourselves caught up and lost in the thick of things – what we think are obstacles sometimes very well turn out to be challenges we have created ourselves. And then we wonder why we aren’t satisfied or content with the big picture.

We need to wake up! We need to pull on our humbling shoes! We need to put on our sniffers and seek out those bits of happy! (Okay, that was over the top cheesy. I will be the first to admit that.) But in all seriousness, we need to realize that in life, the roses are always there. Always have been there.

And we are given the opportunity to make one of two choices. We can choose to walk by the beautiful bouquet in ignorance. Or, we can choose to stop and take a moment to appreciate their beauty. Happiness is all around us all the time. And it’s up to you to recognize it, nurture it and allow it to inspire joyfulness each and every day you are given.

Happy Wednesday!

Bit of Happy #64: Enough Beautiful Moments

10 Dec

So often life is not filled with love and laughter as much as loneliness and disappointment. But there will be enough of those beautiful moments with very special people that make it all seem worthwhile.
-Javan

First off, Happy Friday! I’m relieved to be home after a ridiculous amount of traffic. Roads were closed everywhere! It was like a maze – a lot of turning around and trying different directions. And that’s not really the best for those who aren’t good at figuring out alternative routes, aka ME! Anyway, I made it home, luckily. Hopefully everyone else did as well!

**********************************************************************

Now for the quote of the day! Javan is by far one of my favorite authors. Although today’s quote isn’t my all-time favorite one of his, it’s definitely up there. If you like this quote and some of the others I’ve posted so far, I encourage you to check out more of his quotes. I can almost guarantee you will not be disappointed.

I believe there’s a level of truth to this quote. I always try to be as happy as I possibly can. And when I’m feeling not-so-happy, I try remind myself of all the reasons I have to celebrate and enjoy the life I’ve been given. By having this type of mentality, I find myself leading a much happier life. Trust me, it’s much easier to focus on how life can be unfair and disheartening. But seeing the good in every situation… that shows true strength.

To address the fact that the quote speaks of life being filled predominately with loneliness and disappointment, I think that’s relative. I think I have to disagree with that part. I believe that you can choose to look at life in two ways; you can choose to focus on the negativity and drown in it, or you can choose to rise above your misfortunes and appreciate all of your gifts.

I absolutely love the words: ‘beautiful moments with very special people that make it all seem worthwhile.’ These are the cherished moments. The moments that give you strength when you feel like there’s nothing left. The moments that – like a brightly shining star in the dark of night – will never fade.

I think there’s a lot to say about this quote. A lot of differing opinions that can come into play. And I would love to hear your thoughts, your perspective!

Soooo, there’s one thing to do! Share your thoughts!

Bit of Happy #63: Don’t Change

9 Dec

“Always be yourself, because the people who mind don’t matter and the people who matter don’t mind.”
-Anonymous

The message in today’s quote is very empowering – always be yourself. Even if I have to stand on top of the tallest building in the world and scream at the top of my lungs to get the point across, I mean: ALWAYS BE YOURSELF!

And this quote couldn’t say it better. Whether you’re overly outgoing or painfully shy, the people that mean the most to you don’t care. They love you (or put up with you, lol) for exactly who you are. And anyone who would ask any different of you, truly isn’t worth your time or worry.

So get out there and be yourself! And only yourself. Don’t change for the world, because I can promise you there’s only one YOU. And if you’re not you, then who will be?!
