Bit of Happy #116: You-ER than YOU!

8 Mar

“Today you are you – that is truer than true. There is no one alive that is you-ER than you.”
-Dr. Suess

Though I didn’t realize it, my sister told me Dr. Suess Day was last week, Wednesday, March 2. Along with giving me that little tid-bit of information, she also gave me a great quote and her personal insight on what today’s Dr. Suess verse means to her!

“You may not know but the other day was Dr. Suess Day, and it brought up some great quotes – this happened to be my favorite. Sometimes it’s not easy to stick to your guns and go against the ‘norm.’ It’s much easier to just do what everyone else does to avoid criticism or feeling left out. But like the doctor says, “nobody is you-ER than you,” and it’s okay to be different. I’m the most comfortable being me, so you either love me or hate me, and I’m okay with that. Sometimes things that were written for five-year-olds still make the most sense.”

Certainly an adorable piece of advice put to a memorable rhyme, Dr. Suess does bring up a wonderful point. Yesterday, today, tomorrow, the next and the next day you will be you. Years down the road you will be you. In fact, there will never be a day of your life that you will be anyone but yourself. You may put on different masks and make decisions that aren’t necessarily your character, but ultimately, it’s still you. Just like it always will be.

So, learn to love the person you are! And be thee best person you can be. You know why? Because no one else on this planet can be any more you-ER than YOU!

Bit of Happy #114: It’s All About The Money

4 Mar

“Life is like a coin. You can spend it any way you wish, but you only spend it once.”
-Lillian Dickson

Normally, I wouldn’t like the value of life being compared to money, but when it comes to today’s quote, I think it’s quite brilliant. Like looking through a piece of glass, the truth lies crystal clear on the other side. And the reality of it is that you can spend this life any way you’d like. You can be whatever you want to be. Do whatever you want to do. But… yes, there is a but…

You can only spend it once. You’ve only got one shot to make it happen. Once chance to make this journey worthwhile. And just like money, once it’s gone, there’s no going back. This is the very reason that so many of Little Bits of Happy quotes are pushing me, and now you, to strive for your dreams. When the going gets tough, keep going. When it seems like the sun will never rise on tomorrow… have a little faith.

Life is so precious, much more so than money will ever be, but when it comes to today’s analogy, it couldn’t be any more true.

Happy Friday!!!

Bit of Happy #101: Live In The Now!

15 Feb

“Learn from the past, set vivid, detailed goals for the future, and live in the only moment of time over which you have any control: now.”
-Denis Waitley

You’ve got to start somewhere, because if there’s no beginning to change, how do you ever expect to grow? Learn from your past, yes, but don’t live in it. By learning, you are changing. And by changing you are growing. And by growing, you are taking advantage of the present and putting your best foot forward.

Today’s quote has a lot of truth in that we only really have control over what is happening in this very moment. The past is already done – something that cannot be changed; something that is completely out of our control. The only thing we can choose to do with our past is learn from it and change how we will live our present.

And the future, well, that story is left unwritten and has yet to unfold. I can’t say, in this moment, that five years from now I will have met my soulmate, and we will get married. I have no control over when that will happen, or if it ever will happen. I believe, when it comes to looking forward to the future, it comes with a lot of hope. Why do I believe that? Honestly, there is no guarantee that I will live past tomorrow, or tonight even. I can only hope. I can only hope that I will live past tomorrow. And the next day. And the next day. And a million days after that!

But the moment in time that we do have control over is now. We can choose to set goals and learn from our past to make the best of the present moment. Whether we go forwards or backwards is completely our decision. Whether we choose to hold on to all of our wrongdoings and drown in our sorrowed memories is completely up to us. But we can also decide to live in the only moment of time over which we have any control… And that is now.

Bit of Happy #84: A Brand New Tomorrow

7 Jan

Morning Ice Storm in 2009.

“Tomorrow is the beginning of the rest of your life.”
-Trading Hearts

Happy Friday, everyone! Unfortunately, I’m not feeling too well today, but I did want to take a moment and post a quote. It’s a very optimistic approach to looking at life and the road ahead. This quote by Trading Hearts inspires me to take each day and treat it as a new beginning. I believe its words can encourage many with that extra push of hope and motivation to get out there and live life to the fullest! To put the past behind them. To go through each day with a smile. To accomplish all of the things they’ve ever dreamed of doing. To reach their passion in life.

And now it’s your turn – to treat tomorrow as your new beginning. What will you do with it?

Bit of Happy #31: Cherish, Dream, Live.

26 Oct

“Cherish yesterday.
Dream tomorrow.
Live today.”
-Richard Bach

Alright, well… I was PLANNING on writing a quality post in tonight, but because of the lovely amounts of traffic I hit on the way home, the whirlwind of making dinner and the fact that I’m meeting a friend for drinks tonight at 7:30, I have absolutely no time to do that.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy today’s quote. I’m sorry that’s all I have time for today. And unfortunately, tomorrow might night be much better (helping a friend with some design homework after work).

Bit of Happy #4: Live for Today

17 Sep

“Death is an absolute. And with each moment that passes, we grow nearer to our ultimate fate. Understand that life is slipping away from your hands. And you never know when tomorrows will run out. So learn to love the life you’ve got. Accept the inevitable truths that so often society teaches us to deny and ignore. Go out and live without your list of things to do tomorrow, and for one day, live as if it were your last… Because before you know it, that day will be your last.”

I love the concept of living for today… of living one day of your life as if you knew it would be your last. That’s what really pulled me toward this quote – that very concept. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, but I feel as though I’d find myself doing something crazy… like jumping out of a plane. But knowing – or well, believing that I have more days to live than only today, I tend pull back on the reckless feats.

And see, that’s the thing about this quote. It’s telling you to do the complete opposite. It’s telling you to not be afraid to step off the ledge, get your hands a little dirty, make the difference you’ve been waiting for… It’s telling you to stop waiting for life to happen, and instead, make it happen.

That’s the problem with life. We hold ourselves back. We think we have many days left in our life to do the things we want so badly to do… so we hold back experiencing. We hold back living. ‘After this happens, then I’ll be able to do this…’ – something I’m at fault for saying. But what if today really was my last? Could I truly say I’ve lived my life to the fullest, and that I’ve done everything I’ve wanted to do? Could you?

Have you ever lived a single day as if it were your last? What did you do?

If you’ve never done it before, what would you imagine your last day to be like? What would you want to do?

Reflecting on these questions can really prioritize and bring forth what is important in life. The insignificant things that we tend to get caught up in will fade into the background.

Share your thoughts.

And remember: don’t just imagine what you’d do, get out there and live it. I can guarantee you that list of things sitting in front of you are some of the most important moments of your life.
