Bit of Happy #148: Together Forever

21 Apr

“We have been friends together in sunshine and in shade.”
-Anonymous

The type of friendship that we all search and long for. Reliability. Strength. Trust. Honesty. A friendship that will uphold through the thick and thin, in the sunshine and shade. That no matter what life brings, no matter what the obstacle or challenge at hand, two true friends will walk together.

Not only does today’s quote suggest this wonderful, “picture-perfect” friendship, but the author also hints towards it being possible (which is one of my favorite parts!). That, in spoken words, it has come true. That an unbreakable bond can be formed between two people throughout life. That compassion and selflessness can shine through despite the crazy ride our lives tend to lead.

And it’s the unpredictable future, the inevitable unknown that truly proves the strength of a friendship. Puts every aspect to the test. There is no doubt that relationships go through ups and downs – bend just before the point of breaking. Despite this struggle, it’s the willingness to fight for the other that will pull both of you through. That will bring your friendship out of the shade and back into the sun.

And the best part, that time of trial will have mostly likely made that bond stronger, richer… more full. You may have learned something new about the other person, or your relationship with them. You may have revealed a new depth of yourself and can now better understand the meaning of trust. You may have proven your confidence and faithfulness to the friendship in a time of doubt.

Always remember… when you find a friendship like the one described in today’s quote, treasure it like gold. Be willing to give it all of the nurture and effort it requires. Hold on tight because the ride along the way can be full of dips and sharp turns. Whether you’re in the shade or basking in the sunshine, hopefully when you look over at that special person, you can smile. You can smile and know that as long as they are at your side, everything will be just fine.

Do you have a friend like this in your life? What are some challenges you have faced along the way?

Bit of Happy #88: What Do You See?

One of the coolest things I’ve ever witnessed:

Ice storm of 2009 (or at least, it makes for great photography!)

“Look at everything as though you were seeing it either for the first or last time.”
-Betty Smith

Whether looking through novice eyes or ones filled with wisdom, the way you choose to see the world around you is solely up to you. Commit yourself to a life of appreciation, of wonder and of possibility. Why? Well through my eyes, this creates a world of magic, each turn through this journey is new and different. It hones your ability to pay attention to detail. It brings the important things in life into perspective. It encourages you to treasure each moment your heart continues to beat.

I love this quote by Betty Smith because it is a reminder to soak in our surroundings as though we’ve never seen it before, or as though we will never have another chance to see it again. May we make this promise to ourselves. May we wear this new set of eyes throughout each and every day. May we spread its important message to others. After all, who is to say we can’t? Why can’t we view everything as though we are seeing it for the first or last time? What is stopping us?

Bit of Happy #16: Forward Looking, Backward

“Like the change in seasons…”

“I’ve learned that things change, people change, and it doesn’t mean you forget the past or try to cover it up. It simply means that you move on and treasure the memories. Letting go doesn’t mean giving up, it means accepting that some things weren’t meant to be. You don’t ever stop loving someone; if you do, you probably never really loved them. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it without knowing what’s going to happen next. Take chances; life is no fun without them. If you screw up, at least you learned something.”
-Lisa Brooks

My life’s motto – almost exactly. My opinion and much the way I live my life is inspired by Lisa Brooks’ quote. There a many things in this quote that are worth mentioning. One – to always move forward. When living your every day, look where your life is going, not where it has been. Now, that does not mean to forget your past or try to sweep it under the rug. Recognize it, remember it, cherish it and learn from it. At the same time, don’t let it run your life. Accept, as she says, that some things simply weren’t meant to be.

The second part of Brooks’ quote recognizes the reality of life – the unknown, but shows you not to fear or run away from it, but rather, embrace it. Taking chances and making the best of any given situation will give meaning and excitement to your life. And in the end, she says that even if the chance taken leads you down the wrong path, at the very least, it is something that you can learn from. I just loved the positivity entwined with this quote. It certainly makes for an uplifting message during difficult times and break ups.

Now that you know my thoughts, what are yours? Do you like how Lisa Brooks’ quote reflects on the way of life?
