Bit of Happy #129: Don’t Miss Out

25 Mar

“Plenty of people miss their share of happiness – not because they never found it, but because they didn’t stop to enjoy it.”
-William Feather

Sometimes it’s difficult for us to realize what we truly have. If some of the most precious things in our lives were suddenly jeopardized, I believe we would see into a small window of what it would be like without them.

After reading that very sentence, it’s the things that first popped into your mind; those are the things that mean the most to you. And those are the first things you should put most of your effort into. Most of you heart into. Stop to enjoy and celebrate the days you are given.

Each and every day you are given with them should be a day cherished. So hug them a little tighter. Love them more than yesterday. Show you appreciate all of the little things they do.

Your happiness is all around you. You’re breathing it in, basking in its warmth. But until you take a moment, close your eyes and remember all of the reasons you have to be happy, you may let it pass you by.

Speaking of happy… Happy Friday!

Bit of Happy #103: Home Is Where The Heart Is

17 Feb

“A smile is a light in the window of the soul indicating that the heart is at home.”
-Anonymous

Is this not one of the sweetest quotes you’ve ever read!? I literally found this a few seconds ago, and I know it’s definitely one that I’ll carry with me throughout the rest of my life.

To me, this quote breathes. Through the words, it comes alive. There’s truth. Purity. Happiness.

By opening the window to your soul, you let others into your heart, and in this quote, a smile is a great place to begin that journey.

I find there are moments in life that can certainly be discouraging. Moments when you may find it difficult to leave the window to your soul open. Moments when you get hurt or are forced to endure some type of hardship… and because of that experience, you may allow that window to close. You may shut yourself off from the world. From the people you love. From the things that make you happy. Because of that obstacle, you find yourself putting off living. Locking the window to your heart.

And this process is very much a part of life. I think it’s impossible for someone to leave the window to their heart open all the time. Especially after being hurt. It’s our way of protection. Our way of defense. I think we should allow that guard to go up, but only for a certain amount of time. Only until we can build up the strength to open the window and let the light in again.

And the best way to start… is with a smile.

Bit of Happy #96: Remake The World

8 Feb

“As you go out to remake the world, I offer the following bits of wisdom — keep learning, stay awake to amazement, be kind rather than right. And, remember, while you might not agree with this now, being loved is better than being rich.”
-Anonymous

I actually found this quote on a card that was given to me by a family member when I graduated from college. I thought its message was perfect for someone who is graduating, or in a more general sense… turning to a new chapter in life. It reveals a very important lesson that everyone can take something from. Little bits of wisdom.

Keep learning. Stay awake to amazement. Be kind. Love should be held above all things. It’s funny because these are often things I find in many other quotes. These very bits of wisdom seem to pop up everywhere. And it’s that continuous reminder that makes me realize how important this advice truly is.

You know, this quote makes me picture a person after 100 years of life, with skin worn from wrinkles and hair of snow white, speaking these very words. That after being in this world all this time, they have learned – whether at the time or when it was too late – that these are the things that are truly important in life. It would be the advice that someone would give today’s youth as guidance towards a path of no regret. Of fulfillment. Of love.

And in the end, isn’t that what is most important? It’s not having all the money in the world. It’s not the tangible possessions either. But what is important is this… It’s the search for happiness and one day reaching it. It’s finding love and understanding how to appreciate it. It’s living in the moment and learning to cherish those memories.

Life is what you make of it. You can live in a world of gloom and darkness – purples and blues. Or, you can open the window and let the light shine in. The choice is yours for the making.

Bit of Happy #90: Stand

31 Jan

“Stand”
by Rascal Flatts

All of us know what it’s like to feel alone. Helpless. Vulnerable. “Like a candle in a hurricane. Just like a picture with a broken frame.” Life comes with a lot of uncertainty. The unknown can be very overwhelming. One minute your traveling along a newly paved road, and the next you find yourself taking twists and turns down a beaten path with no end in sight. “Stand” by Rascal Flatts recognizes those bumps in the road, but also shows the strength and patience people have to find the next right turn.

“Because when push comes to shove,
You taste what you’re made of.
You might bend ’til you break,
Because it’s all you can take.

On your knees you look up,
Decide you’ve had enough.
You get mad, you get strong.
Wipe your hands, shake it off,
Then you stand.”

I had a hard time finding the song I wanted to share this week, but the moment I skimmed over “Stand” in my iTunes playlist, there was no question. The lyrics are pure and real. Like the sunlight through a dusty window, this song shines truth and strength, overpowering the uncertainty that life sometimes leads.

Life’s like a novel,
With the end ripped out.
The edge of a canyon,
With only one way down.

Take what you’re given,
Before its gone.
Start holding on,
Keep holding on.”

It expresses the fight and determination. The hope and appreciation. We all have it inside of us. Burning inside of us. Sometimes it’s not always easy to find, but once our search crosses paths with that passion, we never give up. We uncover a new direction. And we don’t stop until we are back up on our own two feet. This song has never failed to give me the inspiration I need to keep fighting when things get tough, and I hope it can do the same for you!

Happy Monday!

Bit of Happy #45: My Wish

15 Nov

I love, love, LOVE this next one. It’s a country song. I know, I know – two country songs in a row, but it really sums everything up; right in these very lyrics are all the things I would hope for, for all of the people I love the most! And to even expand that – EVERYONE! I wish this kind of life for everyone in the world. Truly, I mean that. There’s a lot you can take and learn from in this song. All of life’s most precious moments and teachings.

I believe this song shows that each and every person – you deserve all of these things – “your dreams stay big, your worries stay small.” I hope you learn to appreciate and cherish all the things this song talks about – “I hope you always forgive and you never regret, and you help somebody every chance you get.” And above all things, I hope you can find this type of strength every day of your life when you get up in the morning and close your eyes at night – “And if one door opens to another door closed, I hope you keep on walking until you find the window.”

Can you guess it? If you don’t know it.. it’s called “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts. Take a moment to listen to the lyrics. I hope you enjoy it.

I always imagined giving this song to my children (with the hope of one day being blessed with that experience, that is). The strength and encouragement within the lyrics are undeniable – the same strength and encouragement I wish to give my children every day for as long as I live.

It’s funny – the director of my mom’s preschool must have felt the same way, because she chose this song to sing for the end of the year at their graduation ceremony. For one, it amazed me that the teachers even wanted to take on the challenge of teaching such a complicated song to their little ones. And two, what was even more amazing is they learned. It shows you can teach anything with the proper patience and enthusiasm. Anyway, I wish I could show you the video of these children singing this song. It was absolutely precious. Beyond precious. And even though they probably didn’t fully understand the lyrics at that moment, I surely hope they one day find themselves living each day through that song.

Just figured this was a little story of hope to bring a few smiles. A way to start off the week on a positive note. Happy Monday!

Do you have a favorite part of the song? Find it inspiring? Encouraging? Motivating?

What lyrics can you take and learn from “My Wish?”
