Bit of Happy #137: It’s All About The Attitude

6 Apr

“Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than success, than what other people think, say or do. It is more important than appearance, gift or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you, we are in charge of our attitudes.”
– Charles Swindoll

A bright perspective on a truly important aspect of life, Charles Swindoll shares a very powerful message with us. Throughout life, I have certainly crossed paths with times of doubt, times of helplessness. There have been times that I felt like I wasn’t good enough or didn’t try my absolute hardest.

With this in mind, I wish I had found today’s quote sooner. I want to put it right above my bed so that every morning when I wake up, I am reminded of how I should go through each day. 10% of life is what happens to me, and 90% of it is how I react to those occurrences – what an incredible outlook! You can choose to smile about all of the things and people you have in your life, or you can choose to focus on what you don’t have. You can choose to allow unfavorable things that happen defeat you, or you can pick yourself up and throw that smile right back on your face.

Life all comes down to attitude. Are you open-minded and energetic about each situation you walk into? Or are you one to always point the finger and look at the negative first in each experience? Your reaction to what life brings is what ultimately determines the quality of each day you’re given. Given that 90% in life, you have all of the power in the world, and what you make of that power is completely up to you.

What do you think of today’s quote by Charles Swindoll?

Bit of Happy #136: A World With No Passion?

5 Apr

“Without passion, you don’t have energy; without energy, you have nothing. Nothing great in the world has been accomplished without passion.”
-Donald Trump

Don’t assume from today’s quote that I’m a huge Donald Trump fan, but I must say this statement has a lot of power. Without passion, without a drive to succeed, nothing great will come out of the effort put forth. In fact, there will be no true effort because there lies an unwillingness to put any amount of substantial energy into the task at hand.

I think it is important to take a step back in life and realize what you are truly passionate about. If it’s about helping others, go out in the world and use that as your driving force to accomplish something great. If it’s about caring for animals, wake up every morning and energize yourself with how you will make that a reality. If it’s about making the world more beautiful, take that dream as your daily motivation to change what is gray and bland into something colorful and bright.

Anyone who matches passion with an undeniable energy to accomplish something great in life has the ability to make a difference. Acquire these qualities and practice them each day. Never lose sight of your dreams, and from there, all you have to do is begin with a single step.

Bit of Happy #133: Vision With Action

31 Mar

“Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.”
-Joel Barker

Dreams rise out from a vision, and they will remain dreams if action does not ensue. The true power comes in when you mesh the two – vision and action. Today’s quote by Joel Barker is inspirational. It whispers the secret to making a difference. To changing the world.

Form a vision. Turn it into a dream. And act on it. Make it happen. The most important thing, never lose sight of that vision as you develop a course of action. Each step you take down the path you have created, make sure it coincides with the dreams you initially built.

With that at the forefront of your mind, driving all your efforts, it will be very difficult to divert your plan down a different road. All you need is a little faith and to follow your heart. Do this, and your vision with action will have the ability to change the world.

Bit of Happy 131: Goals Aren’t Enough!

29 Mar

“Goals aren’t enough! You need goals plus deadlines: goals big enough to get excited about and deadlines to make you run. One isn’t much good without the other, but together they can be tremendous.”
-Ben Feldman

A while back, I started thinking about where Little Bits of Happy was going. What do I want to accomplish? When will it be finished? How many Little Bits of Happy should there be? For the past two months or so, I’ve been sitting on these big questions. I started this blog without a clear distinct ending point, and though I had a goal of changing the world through my quotes and my thoughts… how will I measure the success of that?

Though some of these questions are still left unanswered, today’s quote by Ben Feldman made me realize the true importance of deadlines. The goal of changing lives through my words was certainly enough to get me excited, but it’s the deadline that I believe will give me the drive to accomplish it. So here it is:

Deadline: I want to get to Bit of Happy #365 by April 30 of next year, 2012.

That’s right! 365 Quotes – one quote for each day of the year! Like your morning coffee, Little Bits of Happy can become a daily ritual – that little bit of inspiration to get motivated for the day ahead.

Since I have #234 left, and that’s more than twice the amount that I have now, I realize the weight of this commitment. It will take a lot of motivation to still be posting a Little Bit of Happy every day this time next year. But I want to do this. And as long as that passion, that drive stays with me, I know I can do this.

Why does there have to be an end? There are a lot of other dreams and aspirations I want to accomplish in life. And believe it or not, this commitment takes up a great deal of my time. Because of this, it is important to have a deadline – an ending point. Not because I want Little Bits of Happy to end, but because I want to fully experience this and then move on to the next chapter in my life. I never imagined this blog would steal my heart the way it has. I’ve always wanted to start one, but never did I think beyond its beginning. And now that Little Bits of Happy has hit the ground running, up to #131, the next step was to look into the future.

I hope you liked today’s quote, and perhaps felt inspired to create a deadline for a goal you have in life. Deadlines get things started and accomplished. And I think it helps us see that what we want is possible. The first step is to begin!

Bit of Happy #127: What Are You Looking For?

23 Mar

“What you see depends on what you’re looking for.”
-Anonymous

At the very last minute, I found this quote, pretty much just as I was sitting down to write today’s entry. There’s a lot truth in this short phrase, and there’s a lot to be said. Have you ever heard of the sayings, ‘You only see what you want to’ or ‘You only hear what you want to hear’? Well, it’s very similar to the point that today’s quote is trying to make.

It is often that we don’t even realize we are choosing what we see and not see, hear and not hear, believe and not believe, do and not do. It’s usually not a conscious decision, but it’s the way our brain works. There’s constantly millions of little things tugging for attention from our senses. Like right now – the smell of dinner cooking that has crept down the hallway, the sound of my fan twirling above me, the rush of cars racing by, the soft feel of the blankets on my bed, the gentle breathing of my dog, the pressure on my ankles from her body, the various soreness or aches from my muscles, the computer screen, everything in the background… Are you getting the idea yet?

Constantly, I have things demanding my attention. If I weren’t writing this entry right now that is asking me to notice my surroundings, I probably wouldn’t have even acknowledged them in the first place. In order to focus on any one thing, we have to allow other things to fade into the background. It’s how our minds think without interruption. It’s how we get “in the zone,” despite what is going on outside of our world. Instead of opening our mind to everything that is around us, sometimes we find ourselves staying closed in to what we consider comfortable – “our bubble.” And that is the exact awareness that this Anonymous author is trying to bring out in the open.

Do you think it is positive to do this in life?

Do you think there may be a lot of missed opportunities with this attitude?

Do you think this results in close-mindedness? If so, how can we work towards breaking that barrier?

Bit of Happy #123: Touches Your Heart

17 Mar

“A friend is someone who reaches for your hand but touches your heart.”
-Anon

The true definition of a friendship – “someone who reaches for your hand but touches your heart.” Today’s quote by Anon is one that I will forever hold on to for the rest of my life. Only having found it a few days ago, it is already one that has found a precious place in my heart.

There is no better way to reach the heart of another than being a friend. I think of my friends as my little miracles. The strength I need to get back up after falling down. The soft smile that takes over, even when my eyes are filled with tears. The reassurance when my world seems to be breaking into pieces. The light and guidance through times of doubt and hardship.

My friends truly are a splash of color in a world of gray. A soft place for weary bones, and the push to put the pieces back together and try again. Without them, I think of times in my life that I don’t know if I would have made it through. They are every hope, every wish, every thought, every bit of encouragement I need for me to be the best person I can be, to try my absolute hardest at reaching my dreams and never stop believing in myself. And even when that last one begins to teeter towards the darkness, they are always there to believe in me. Sometimes, that’s all you need – they reach for your hand but touch your heart.

Bit of Happy #121: Doesn’t Make The World Go Round

15 Mar

“Love doesn’t make the world go round, but it makes the ride worthwhile.”
-Franklin P. Jones

Without love and compassion, where would we be in life? The world may certainly still be turning at its normal rotation, the seasons may still come and go… but without love, what do you truly have? Would our journey in life still be the same? Would we be any less complete at life’s end?

Perhaps the answers to these questions vary from person to person – but, to me – life isn’t worth living if it means there’s no such thing as love. To me, without love the ride wouldn’t be worthwhile. In fact, there would be no ride at all. Not a ride that is worth experiencing, anyway.

Today’s quote truly puts the important things in life into perspective. It’s not about the money. Or the tangible, materialistic items. Or the achieved social status. It’s not about any of those things. In the end, it’s about love. It’s about family. It’s about those special relationships you’ve built with friends and significant others. When all else fails, it’s love that will prevail above any other. Through thick and thin. Through devastation and hardship. Through fire and ice.

So even though love may not have the power to make the world go round, it certainly has the ability to changes lives. To make this life worth living. And now, let me ask you this… which one holds more power?
